The letter did not have additional signatories. It originated solely from Representative Deal.

You are ill-informed on the “birther” issue. Barack Obama, by his own admission, was a British subject at birth. He has never denied having a Kenyan father, who himself was a British subject as a Kenyan native. This is easly established under the British Nationality Act of 1948. He is therefore disqualified to run for the office of the President, because the office is not available to subjects of other governments. The issue is very simple, and very obvious. Obama himself admitted that he wasn’t a natural born citizen when he debated Alan Keyes in 2004.

Let’s see you deal with this one. There is nothing “nutty” about it, and it doesn’t depend on whether his maternal grandmother tried to cover up a foreign birth in Hawaii by placing newspaper notices. It is as plain as your face. BHO is a foreign national first, and an American secondarily, if at all. That is why he thinks there are 57 states; why he doesn’t understand the constitution; why he wants to give us Britain’s health care system (it’s all in the teeth, don’t you know); why he thinks Interpol should have greater authority in the US than US law enforcement; etc. He is a British subject and has no business holding the office of POTUS.

If you think you can overlook this constitutional crisis as not part of the Rubicon, you are mistaken. One constitutional overlook breeds another and the next thing you know, the financial industry is nationalized, the auto industry is nationalized, the health care industry is about to be nationalized, and the energy industry will soon be nationalized.

Ultimately, it is all going to be okay, because socialism only lasts until other people’s money (OPM) runs out, and binge spender BHO has spent all the money we have and all the money we will ever have for the next several generations. He spent all of this before he got his socialist healthcare on the table. He and his wife have partied like Eddie Murphy in The Distinguished Gentleman (1992) since taking office, while he has busied himself with overthrowing the constitutional republic, establishing a new Islamic empire worldwide, disarming and crippling America, and unilaterally dividing Israel and Jerusalem. The only budget constraint for Obama is ink and paper (and he is working his way around that) and his foreign policy advisor appears to be “mirror, mirror on the wall”. He has bankrupted the nation, which the sleeping Oprah watchers are now discovering for the very first time. The reality of the bankruptcy will hit home with gusto in 2010. Not only will we suffer with 30% unemployment, a complete collapse of real estate, and a complete collapse of the dollar, we will also suffer the slings and arrows of dramatic military defeats, as we let this foreigner steer the ship of state. Most Americans have no idea how bad it is going to get.

As for Obama: he will be one of history’s most reviled figures - on a par with Nero - as a fool who couldn’t even understand that when he denigrated the United States, he was destroying the very state upon which his safety and his legacy depended. He will suffer dramatic defeat in Afghanistan and Iraq - it will not be like Viet Nam, and his name will be tarred with it. It will be more like the disastrous defeat of Xerxes at Salamis, or the Ottomans at Sisek, or the Moors at Tours; a game changing defeat that will forever cement the destiny of the republic known as the United States of America. Obama will join the other names in history who suffered cataclysmic losses in the lands of Magog.

His legacy? A communist, collectivist fool, brainwashed by red diaper doper babies haunting the halls of ivy league academia whose agenda was to bring back the failed Bolshevik revolution worldwide, who brought his fully bloomed ignorance to power illegally in the US because of the needs of his narcissistic ego, whose illegitimacy caused the US to go bankrupt and to suffer its worst military setbacks in the history of the nation in just a few short months. History will marvel at the foolishness of Americans, and historians will wonder how we as a people could have allowed this to happen. Then, of course, historians will ultimately conclude that the demise of the greatest nation the world had ever known happened because the watchdogs whose duty it was to warn Americans of such possibilities - the so-called news media - conspired with foreign powers and global financial criminals to destroy America from the inside, as a result of their cowardice, malevolence and silence.

Glen Beck: a media persona who simply could not bring himself to utter the truth about Obama - that he is a usurper, holding the presidency illegally and unconstitutionally, because he is without a legal birthright. 16. Get Naked to Defeat Terrorists?

"We were very lucky this time," quavers Joe Lieberman, the supposedly independent senator from Connecticut dedicated to defeating Israel's enemies with American lives and money. He was speaking of Northwest Airlines' Flight 253 and Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab's attempt at self-immolation thereon. Joe waved his cowardice proudly, rallying Nervous Nellies to his standard: "[B]ut we may not be so lucky next time, which is why our defenses must be strengthened. . . .why isn't whole body scanning technology that can detect explosives in wider use?"

Well, for starters, because it's completely, indubitably, diametrically unconstitutional. Alas, most Americans, particularly those elected to Congress, shrug at the Fourth Amendment's prohibition of "unreasonable" searches (and searches don't come any more unreasonable than "whole body scanning," during which the Transportation Security Administration's [TSA] screeners photograph you naked, right through your clothes, at airport checkpoints).

Still, the Constitution isn't the only treasure these X-rated X-rays assault. Dignity and modesty also sustain knock-out blows -- and you needn't be a prude to think so. The American Civil Liberties Union is hardly a bastion of bashfulness, yet it denounces whole-body imaging as "a significant -- and for some people humiliating -- assault on the essential dignity of passengers that citizens in a free nation should not have to tolerate." Meanwhile, the Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) compared such scans "to a 'virtual strip search' for all air travelers . . . The level of detail uncovered [is] akin to a disrobing in public: the images seen by the screeners reveal the outlines of nipples and genitalia."

18. CAFR1 NATIONAL POST Is Lincoln County Governemt doing this?
Here are a few big pointers for everyone's comprehension:

1. ENRON promoted their profit and hid their debt. Government on the other hand promotes their debt and hides their profit. The reason being is that as government promotes their debt to the public at the front door, and through the back door they are using their own investment funds to fund their own debt and thus locking in the public for repayment to guarantee a substantial profit. This is done through several methods. The basic is through investment accounts held through domestic and "international" banks, Insurance companies, and brokerage firms. The internal way of doing it is for a state to start a Financial Enterprise Operation as was the case back in the 90's in Missouri through the creation of The Missouri finance Authority (State created and run operation created without taxpayer approval or general knowledge thereof being that it had no taxing authority) whereby all of the Cities; Counties; School Districts; and State agencies invested through . Example: City (X) invests $100,000,000 and the same City (X) has three bond issuance's totaling $100,000,000 that are funded by the Missouri Finance Authority. Well, if city (X) was asked "Are you funding your own debt? They could honestly answer "No". If they were asked: "Do you have $100,000,000 invested with the Missouri Finance Authority and is the Missouri Finance Authority funding approximately 100% of your $100,000,000 in bond offerings, then the honest answer would be "Yes". This practice started back in the 70's across the country and come the year 2000 many local governments were 100% self funded using their own investment assets and as was the case with Missouri back in the 90's, the outstanding bond issuance that were funded by the private sector they came in and refinanced themselves a a .25 (1/4) pt lower. The only response I received from the investment manager of that authority when I contacted him back in 1999 was: "Look a t what a good job we are doing investing the public funds, we got them a quarter point lower then they could have got from the private sector"

2. Most local Government pension / retirement investment funds are set up as "strictly participatory". What that means is it is like buying a ticket on a train. You get to ride from point A to point C but you do not own one piece of the train when you get off at point C. For the local government employees participating in this type of program they get a ticket to ride under set terms but do not own 1c of those funds, the local governments own the fund; balance; and holdings... This gives a very big incentive for the local governments to play actuarial projection games to inflate the balances being that they are growth in their power base. I put up as an example the NY State Retirement Fund listing of investments for several years for viewing. I note that as you look down the listing of domestic and international investments held you will notice in order of the top profit makers rolling over returns of 200% to 600% over a few years in order of the top fou r: Pharmaceutical Companies; Bank / Financial Companies; Oil / Energy Companies; War industry Groups. Personally I say that's a tad bit of a conflict of interest towards the underling motives for policy set me says.. Now you will not find one specific government fund owning by statutory restriction more than 5% to 7% of any one company but from the thousands of government funds large and small you will have in collective totals controlling interest held in these companies both domestic and foreign. (Those collective 5%'s held add up quickly). Now here is where the monopoly of control sets in. Many local governments will now participate with private associations established with nice sounding government acronyms. There may be several hundred if not several thousand local governments that are members. By being members they can assign proxy voting rights to these private associations whereby collective ownership exercised can determine policy and if needed replace the entire boa rd of directors if policy edicts suggested are not followed. This includes mandatory outsourcing to accomplish higher rates of returns for investments held.

Did you just have one of your biggest Ah, Ha moments of your life?

You will never see collective ownership totals by collective local government talked about or qualified anywhere officially for obvious and condemning reasons. The world is not as we are spoon feed to believe it is when government collective ownership totals are tabulated and digested.

An important note here when looking at the above referenced report is that when it comes also to debt held by the private sector either by mortgages or credit cards, please look at the investments shown below the listing of domestic and international companies, You will see the billions in cash loans; bonds held; real-estate held (Condo; apartment; shopping malls) etc. Investment ownership by government branches out into many different arenas which before reading this most probably assumed were held by private investment and not government.

On a last note, let me qualify how a profit is turned into an "advanced liability". Here I will use a county run recycling plant as an example. The public is pitched that recycling is a good thing and passes a fifty million dollar bond issuance to build a recycling plant. The plant is built and mandatory recycling is enforced in the county. I note that this is supposed to be a "NON-PROFIT" government run enterprise operation; Well, within the first year the recycling plant generates 45 million dollars and its cost for operation is 35 million so the buy more equipment and expand there personnel to eat up the extra 10 million to be a not for profit operation, BUT they know their curve is going to yield a 25 million dollar profit next year, SO they contact an actuary and say: "We are doing so well that in fifteen years we are going to have to expand our operation five times fold, how much money are we going to need?" The actuary then tak es into account land; equipment; personnel; transfer costs; etc., and comes up with a figure of say 780 million dollars needed 15 years down the road to get this done..... SO, then the recycling plant as expected makes a 25 million dollar profit BUT monthly or quarterly makes a payment into the advance liability account equaling 25 million dollars listing it as a line item operating liability payment and voi'la' no profit for the year. The same happens each following year as the fund of 780 million is built. Now if they want to take it a step further in year five and they make a 45 million dollar profit for the year but funnel 55 million dollars into the advance forward liability account, they can come back on the residents and say: "Gee we all know that recycling is a good thing, but we are operating at a 10 million dollar deficit on our "operating budget" and we are going to have to raise collection fees". This is one way of turning a profit into an adva nce forward debt. Well, if the public does not know about the advance forward liability account the increase in fees slides right in without opposition where as in the alternative if the public did know that an advance liability account existed of several hundred million dollars (only "discreetly" accounted for on the books of the county enterprise operation's Annual Financial report and not the County's AFR), they would in most probabilities organized to cancel any collections fees and take a very close look at government operating as a for profit enterprise under mandatory terms in their own back yard.

I hope I have given some substantial food for thought to the readers here. When their is great wealth the potential for great theft exists.

21. The Grand Jury, An Idea whose time has come.
Jay Stevens writes in the blog "Left in the West" trying to discredit the Grand Jury, which we will show has a very good history in the USA for many decades before it became controlled by prosecutors.

Mr. Stevens is right about one thing. "I know some among my circle of progressive friends are a little nervous about conservatives wanting to create a "citizen grand jury" for Montana,...."  Progressives are nervous about this proposal. Why is that?

They only need to be nervous if they have something to hide that would be unlawful. Otherwise they should welcome the chance to testify or maybe bring complaints to the Grand Jury. The Grand Jury is there to preserve the rule of law, and stop the rule by men sitting in positions of power, making the rules as they go.  The highest law that needs to be preserved is the Constitution FOR the United States. “All laws which are repugnant to the Constitution are null and void.” Marbury vs. Madison 5 US (2 Cranch) 137, 174, 176, (1803)
The Constitution includes "privacy in their persons, papers, houses and effects". Mr. Stevens evidently wants you to believe that a Grand Jury would make all your private business and personal information available to the public. Not true.

An independent grand jury is to “stand between the prosecutor and the accused,” and to determine whether a charge is legitimate, or is “dictated by malice or personal ill will” (Hale v. Henkel, 201 U.S. 43 (1906)). The grand jury is to protect citizens against “hasty, malicious and oppressive persecution” and to insure that prosecutions are not “dictated by an intimidating power or by malice and personal ill will” (Wood v. Georgia, 370 U.S. 375 (1962)).

Mr. Stevens says "Heck! And you can present all kinds of weak evidence that makes the defendant look guilty in the court of public opinion!"

I ask, isn't that already happening in the justice courts?  I know of several JP court justices that seem to think an order of protection is the remedy for absolutely everything. They slam the gavel and issue an order that makes the responder look guilty of all kinds of crimes on just the sayso of the complainant without ever requiring the person complaining to provide any evidence, photos, afidavits, witnesses, or any proof whatsoever, and all this without benefit of any jury of their peers. These JP judges deny the respondent the ability to call any witnesses for the defense, or have any character witnesses in the courtroom. They "convict" the respondent on the spot of whatever they have been accused of by their own judgement alone. Then the sheriff will use that unsubstantiated order like they would use a conviction, to build a case for other and maybe unrelated charges, all trumped up to smear and defame their own political opponents, and destroy the lives of the accused, and now "convicted" by only a Judge's sayso.

This happens daily in Montana and all over the nation. There is no protection for the accused in this scenario whatsoever. What happened to "Innocent until proven guilty beyond a doubt"? The JP courts are not a court of record, so it's easy for the JP judges to simply deny any wrongdoing. And trying to get that order reviewed by a state district court is very expensive and time consuming, so much so that the respondent won't be able to do it. The JP judges know that. They count on it. They abuse their power and use it as a weapon to destroy their political opposition.

This is exactly the kind of abuse of power that the Grand Jury is designed to protect We the People from.

You have the right as a trial juror to judge of the law as well as the facts in any case you are on. You already have that right. You don't have to lobby for it. You don't have to get any new laws passed. You don't have to change the Constitution. You just have to understand and exercise your rights. You have to take command in the jury room, and educate your fellow jurors. You have to enforce the Constitution and nullify bad laws in the jury room. You have to uphold the God given "unalienable" natural laws expressed and protected by the Constitution in the jury room. It's your power, unless you give it away to the judge when he tells you that you don't have it. That is right. The judges abuse their power by saying you must take the law "the way I give it to you" in effect saying you are too stupid to understand it. This arrogance needs to be stopped and soon. In fact the most famous Judge to make this mistake was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Samuel Chase. In the US v. Callender case attempted to rule that a jury could not decide the Constututionality of a law. It may have been partially by the following statement that he averted impeachment.

Some people would like you to believe that the ordinary citizen is incapable of understanding these issues. Some would like you to believe you are too dumb to read these laws and make sense of them. We shall see later how unlawful and corrupt these "rule of men" people really are.  I say again. those who oppose this lawful idea of reviving the standing Grand Jury should be the first to be investigated. Without accusing them of anything, I would bet that many get a paycheck from some branch of government.

It seems that leftists don't want you to know these history lessons. It seems they don't want you to exercise your true power to stop corruption. So now it's up to you. You no longer can say "But what can we do about it?"

In the early 20th century, Argentina was one of the richest countries in the world. While Great Britain’s maritime power and its far-flung empire had propelled it to a dominant position among the world’s industrialized nations, only the United States challenged Argentina for the position of the world’s second-most powerful economy.



It was blessed with abundant agriculture, vast swaths of rich farmland laced with navigable rivers and an accessible port system. Its level of industrialization was higher than many European countries: railroads, automobiles and telephones were commonplace.



In 1916, a new president was elected. Hipólito Irigoyen had formed a party called The Radicals under the banner of “fundamental change” with an appeal to the middle class.



Among Irigoyen’s changes: mandatory pension insurance, mandatory health insurance, and support for low-income housing construction to stimulate the economy. Put simply, the state assumed economic control of a vast swath of the country’s operations and began assessing new payroll taxes to fund its efforts.



With an increasing flow of funds into these entitlement programs, the government’s payouts soon became overly generous. Before long its outlays surpassed the value of the taxpayers’ contributions. Put simply, it quickly became under-funded, much like the United States’ Social Security and Medicare programs.



The death knell for the Argentine economy, however, came with the election of Juan Perón. Perón had a fascist and corporatist upbringing; he and his charismatic wife aimed their populist rhetoric at the nation’s rich.



This targeted group “swiftly expanded to cover most of the propertied middle classes, who became an enemy to be defeated and humiliated.”



Under Perón, the size of government bureaucracies exploded through massive programs of social spending and by encouraging the growth of labor unions.



High taxes and economic mismanagement took their inevitable toll even after Perón had been driven from office. But his populist rhetoric and “contempt for economic realities” lived on. Argentina’s federal government continued to spend far beyond its means.



Hyperinflation exploded in 1989, the final stage of a process characterized by “industrial protectionism, redistribution of income based on increased wages, and growing state intervention in the economy…”



The Argentinian government’s practice of printing money to pay off its public debts had crushed the economy. Inflation hit 3000%, reminiscent of the Weimar Republic. Food riots were rampant; stores were looted; the country descended into chaos.



And by 1994, Argentina’s public pensions — the equivalent of Social Security — had imploded. The payroll tax had increased from 5% to 26%, but it wasn’t enough. In addition, Argentina had implemented a value-added tax (VAT), new income taxes, a personal tax on wealth, and additional revenues based upon the sale of public enterprises. These crushed the private sector, further damaging the economy.



A government-controlled “privatization” effort to rescue seniors’ pensions was attempted. But, by 2001, those funds had also been raided by the government, the monies replaced by Argentina’s defaulted government bonds.



By 2002, “…government fiscal irresponsibility… induced a national economic crisis as severe as America’s Great Depression.”



In 1902 Argentina was one of the world’s richest countries. Little more than a hundred years later, it is poverty-stricken, struggling to meet its debt obligations amidst a drought.



We’ve seen this movie before. The Democrats’ populist plans can’t possibly work, because government bankrupts everything it touches. History teaches us that ObamaCare and unfunded entitlement programs will be utter, complete disasters.

Today’s Democrats are guilty of more than stupidity; they are enslaving future generations to poverty.

Every one of the criminals in Washington who vote for this Obamacare monster needs to be indicted, arrested and put on trial for Treason against the US Constitution.

The U.S. Attorneys Manual states that prosecutors “must recognize that the grand jury is an independent body, whose functions include not only the investigation of crime and the initiation of criminal prosecution but also the protection of the citizenry from unfounded criminal charges” (USAM, Section 9-11.010). The Manual recognizes that targets of investigations have the right and can “request or demand the opportunity to tell the grand jury their side of the story” (USAM, Section 9-11.152).

The Supreme Court states that the independent grand jury’s purpose is not only to investigate possible criminal conduct, but to act as a “protector of citizens against arbitrary and oppressive governmental action,” and to perform its functions, the independent grand jury “deliberates in secret and may determine alone the course of its inquiry” (United States v. Calandra, 414 U.S. 338 (1974)).

An independent grand jury is to “stand between the prosecutor and the accused,” and to determine whether a charge is legitimate, or is “dictated by malice or personal ill will” (Hale v. Henkel, 201 U.S. 43 (1906)). The grand jury is to protect citizens against “hasty, malicious and oppressive persecution” and to insure that prosecutions are not “dictated by an intimidating power or by malice and personal ill will” (Wood v. Georgia, 370 U.S. 375 (1962)).

The independent grand jury is described as “a body with powers of investigation and inquisition, the scope of whose inquiries is not to be limited narrowly by questions of propriety or forecasts of the probable result of the investigation” (Branzburg v. Hayes, 408 U.S. 665 (1972)). “Without thorough and effective investigation, the grand jury would be unable either to ferret out crimes deserving of prosecution, or to screen out charges not warranting prosecution.” (U.S. v. 30. Ron Paul: The Fed's Money Monopoly

Last week, in the name of protecting the little guy from Wall Street, the House passed HR 4173 to increase the little guy’s false sense of security in the financial system. This mammoth piece of legislation would massively increase government regulation and oversight in the banking industry under the misguided reasoning that more government could have stopped faulty lending practices, when in actuality it caused them. This bill would also greatly increase the powers of the Federal Reserve, which too many in Congress still see as savior rather than perpetrator in this mess.

One silver lining is that the amendment to audit the Fed is still attached to the bill, and if it survives the Senate, the Fed will no longer operate in secrecy. If any version of HR 4173 becomes law, the Fed will be intervening and bailing out more rather than less, as it will gain enormous new powers in addition to those it already has. Whatever happens, the Fed and its defenders have seen that people are becoming very wary of its methods of operation, and many are downright angry at its very existence. Never again will the Fed be immune from the scrutiny of its critics. This is very positive.

Because of legal tender laws that force acceptance of the dollar, the Fed has absolute power over the currency. This absolute power is leading to the absolute corruption of our currency. The money supply has doubled in the last year or so, which is extremely dangerous. The banks seem to be hoarding liquidity now but once these dollars make their way into the economy, hyperinflation and economic chaos will be a real possibility.

Every time hyperinflation rips through an economy, the middle class gets completely wiped out. It is very alarming to watch the purchasing power of an entire life savings reduced to that of a few pennies. Those savings represent years of real labor, real time, effort and sacrifice exchanged for corruptible pieces of paper that politicians and bankers can destroy at whim.

Legal tender laws force the people to become subject to this risk for the benefit of the rulers. Artificial demand for currency allows the authorities to create arbitrary amounts of it to pay for wasteful projects, like frivolous wars and an ever-expanding public sector. This saps the private economy of jobs and purchasing power, yet the temptation proves too great for politicians, time and time again. Our government is no different. Although our dollar has taken nearly a century to lose 98f its purchasing power, the fact that we are all obliged to participate in this slow burn of the economy on pain of imprisonment is anathema to the principles of liberty.

I introduced the Free Competition in Currency Act last week to free the people from these governmental threats. HR 4248 would repeal legal tender laws, prohibit taxation on certain coins and bullion, and repeal certain laws related to coinage. The prospect of people turning away from the dollar towards alternate currencies should provide incentive for Congress to regain control of the dollar and halt its downward spiral. Restoring soundness to the dollar will remove the government's ability and incentive to inflate the currency and keep us from launching unconstitutional wars that burden our economy to excess. With a sound currency, everyone is better off, not just those who control the monetary system. End Ron Paul's letter.

The Office of Montana’s Secretary of State Has Accepted a Draft Ballot Initiative Seeking to Provide the Citizens of Montana the Ability to Summon Grand Juries By Petition

Stevensville, Montana, November 10, 2009 – The office of Montana’s Secretary of State (SOS) in Helena has accepted a ballot initiative, to be reviewed by the office of Legislative Services. This is the beginning stage of placing the initiative on the 2010 general election ballot. This initiative has been labeled ‘Ballot Issue #18’ by the SOS, and is a Constitutional Initiative (CI), seeking to amend Montana’s Constitution, providing for the ability of the citizens to summon Grand Juries by petition.

Currently, the Montana Constitution only provides that a District Judge, at their discretion, may summon a Grand Jury. Article II, Section 20, Paragraph 2 states: “A grand jury shall consist of eleven persons, of whom eight must concur to find an indictment. A grand jury shall be drawn and summoned only at the discretion and order of the district judge.”

Serving as a ‘check and balance’ for the Constitutional Republic known as the United States, the Founders had preserved for the citizens, the right and ability to assure that the public servants kept their activities in line with the intent of the Constitution, and its Bill of Rights, which were ratified on December 15, 1791. The term Grand Jury is mentioned only in the 5th amendment to the United States Constitution. It is meant to be a right retained by the people. It is a citizen function, not a government function, as the public has been lead to believe.

The Supreme Court states that the independent grand jury’s purpose is not only to investigate possible criminal conduct, but to act as a “protector of citizens against arbitrary and oppressive governmental action,” and to perform its functions; the independent grand jury “deliberates in secret and may determine alone the course of its inquiry.”
United States v. Calandra, 414 U.S. 338 (1974)

Article IV, Section 4 of The United States Constitution says: “The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government …” And, Montana is this form of government. As such, the Montana Constitution states in Section 1: “Popular sovereignty. All political power is vested in and derived from the people. All government of right originates with the people, is founded upon their will only, and is instituted solely for the good of the whole.”

And, in Section 2: “Self-government. The people have the exclusive right of governing themselves as a free, sovereign, and independent state. They may alter or abolish the constitution and form of government whenever they deem it necessary.”

The Founders’ intended for the sovereign citizens to ‘lend’ the public servants their specific duties. Among these is the preservation of constitutionally protected rights. The servants are not in a position, and do not have the ability to take away these sovereign, constitutionally secured rights and powers of the people.

Amending Montana’s Constitution as indicated will serve to restore the Founders’ intent, at the state level, regarding the position of, and political responsibilities required by, the citizenry.

32. ANGER WITH FEDERAL GOVERNMENT NOT ENOUGH
The States are the Answer. Grand Juries are the teeth. Replace the Judges, Sheriffs, and legislators who are not keeping their Oath of office to Defend, protect and OBEY the Constitution. Start at the local level. The US Government is a creature of the States. Any one who opposes the formation of a standing citizen's Grand Jury must have something to hide. You will find most of the oppostition gets a paycheck from government. Those opposing the Grand Jury need to be investigated most.

According to Rasmussen Reports, "Seventy-one percent (71%) of voters nationwide say they're at least somewhat angry about the current policies of the federal government. That figure includes 46% who are Very Angry.
"The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that only 27% are not angry about the government's policies, including 10% who are Not at All Angry."

The report goes on to say, "The data suggests that the level of anger is growing. The 71% who are angry at federal government policies today is up five percentage points since September.

"Even more stunning, the 46% who are Very Angry is up 10 percentage points from September."

Anger and opposition to Washington's policies and edicts--no matter now egregious--hardly ever translate into anything beyond words of frustration. And Washington politicians don't pay much attention to rhetoric--not even their own.

Therefore, it is absolutely obligatory that freedom-minded Americans refocus their attention to electing State legislators, governors, judges and sheriffs who will fearlessly defend their God-given liberties. And, as plainly and emphatically as I know how to say it, I am telling you: ONLY THE STATES CAN DEFEND OUR LIBERTY NOW! And awakening to this reality means we will have to completely readjust our thinking and priorities.

If we had more State legislators such as Washington State's Matthew Shea; Georgia's Bobby Franklin; Pennsylvania's Sam Rohrer; New Hampshire's Dan Itse; Michigan's Paul Opsommer; Oklahoma's Randy Brogdon, Sally Kern and Charles Key; Montana's Rick Jore, Greg Hinkle, and Joel Boniek; Tennessee's Susan Lynn; South Carolina's Michael Pitts and Lee Bright; Missouri's Jim Guest and Cynthia Davis; and sheriffs such as South Carolina's Ray Nash, Arizona's Richard Mack and Joe Arpaio, Montana's Jay Printz and Shane Harrington, etc., it wouldn't matter what those nincompoops inside the Beltway do. The federal government cannot violate your rights and steal your freedoms without the consent and approbation of your State government.

33. New Films AVATAR AND INVICTUS, Propaganda for the Left.

Millions of Americans go to the box office during the Christmas holiday season. This year, it is expected herds will go see James Cameron's Avatar and Clint Eastwood's Invictus. Not me. I haven't been the movie theater since I saw Pirates of the Carribean (3) back in 2007. Very disappointing as was installment number two. You see, as I wrote many years ago in a column: I don't like what Hollywood sells and so I don't put money in their pocket because I don't 'need' what they call entertainment.

Also, as a personal preference, I don't like all these electronic movies where the art of acting has been lost. Yes, I loved the first three Star Wars. Yes, the first few Star Treks were pretty good, but in the past 20 years, it seems like everything is all special effects. I suppose it's my age. I consider fine films to be "old" ones with talented stars like Gary Cooper, Jimmy Stewart, Burt Lancaster, Steve McQueen, Gregory Peck, Charleton Heston, John Wayne, Glenn Ford, Maureen O'Hara, Angela Lansbury, Ingrid Bergman and so many others. They had to act. Today it's strip off your clothes, jump in bed or state of the art gagetry. But, I stray from my point about Avatar and Invictus.

I have not seen Avatar nor will I, but I have read quite a bit about it. Ted Baeher is an excellent movie critic and has written a powerful statement as to the dangerous message contained in that film: 'Avatar': Pagan, communist, anti-American, insane

Rarely has a political movement with so much power collapsed so fast, certainly not since the fall of the Berlin Wall.

Beginning in 1990, Global Warming has been the battle cry behind schemes for global control of industry, energy use, water use, private property and community development. It has been the excuse for economy-killing legislation like Cap and Trade (that will extract $865 billion from an already overtaxed people who use energy), and global-to-local polices like Sustainable Development (that robs local communities of freedom to decide their own future development). As a result, the world economy is being transformed into a new Dark Ages of superstition and thought-control – all in the name of Global Warming – or more recently – Climate Change.

To enforce their agenda of top down control over the world economy based on Climate Change, the one factor they had to oversee with an iron hand was the science and how it was reported. They were well aware that any crack in public confidence of that science could mark their doom.

The cracks began to show just over two years ago as Senator James Inhofe took over chairmanship of the Senate Environment Committee. As he held hearings on the issue of Climate Change, for the first time those scientists whose research didn’t agree with official global reports were heard. It caused a sensation. Suddenly, the claims of consensus rang hollow. There was disagreement. There was debate. Truth began to leak through the cracks.

"Mr. Speaker, we are here now in chapter 11.. Members of Congress are official trustees presiding over the greatest reorganization of any Bankrupt entity in world history, the U.S. Government. We are setting forth hopefully, a blueprint for our future. There are some who say it is a coroner's report that will lead to our demise.

It is an established fact that the United States Federal Government has been dissolved by the Emergency Banking Act, March 9, 1933, 48 Stat. 1, Public Law 89-719; declared by President Roosevelt, being bankrupt and insolvent. H.J.R. 192, 73rd Congress m session June 5, 1933 - Joint Resolution To Suspend The Gold Standard and Abrogate The Gold Clause dissolved the Sovereign Authority of the United States and the official capacities of all United States Governmental Offices, Officers, and Departments and is further evidence that the United States Federal Government exists today in name only.

The receivers of the United States Bankruptcy are the International Bankers, via the United Nations, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. All United States Offices, Officials, and Departments are now operating within a de facto status in name only under Emergency War Powers. With the Constitutional Republican form of Government now dissolved, the receivers of the Bankruptcy have adopted a new form of government for the United States. Public Law 94-564, page 8, Section H.R. 13955 reads in part: "The U.S. Secretary of Treasury receives no compensation for representing the United States?'

Gold and silver were such a powerful money during the founding of the united states of America, that the founding fathers declared that only gold or silver coins can be "money" in America. Since gold and silver coinage were heavy and inconvenient for a lot of transactions, they were stored in banks and a claim check was issued as a money substitute. People traded their coupons as money, or "currency." Currency is not money, but a money substitute. Redeemable currency must promise to pay a dollar equivalent in gold or silver money. Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs) make no such promises, and are not "money." A Federal Reserve Note is a debt obligation of the federal United States government, not "money?' The federal United States government and the U.S. Congress were not and have never been authorized by the Constitution for the united states of America to issue currency of any kind, but only lawful money, -gold and silver coin.

It is essential that we comprehend the distinction between real money and paper money substitute. One cannot get rich by accumulating money substitutes, one can only get deeper into debt. We the People no longer have any "money." Most Americans have not been paid any "money" for a very long time, perhaps not in their entire life. Now do you comprehend why you feel broke? Now, do you understand why you are "bankrupt," along with the rest of the country?

Federal Reserve Notes (FRNs) are unsigned checks written on a closed account. FRNs are an inflatable paper system designed to create debt through inflation (devaluation of currency). when ever there is an increase of the supply of a money substitute in the economy without a corresponding increase in the gold and silver backing, inflation occurs.

Inflation is an invisible form of taxation that irresponsible governments inflict on their citizens. The Federal Reserve Bank who controls the supply and movement of FRNs has everybody fooled. They have access to an unlimited supply of FRNs, paying only for the printing costs of what they need. FRNs are nothing more than promissory notes for U.S. Treasury securities (T-Bills) - a promise to pay the debt to the Federal Reserve Bank.

There is a fundamental difference between "paying" and "discharging" a debt. To pay a debt, you must pay with value or substance (i.e. gold, silver, barter or a commodity). With FRNs, you can only discharge a debt. You cannot pay a debt with a debt currency system. You cannot service a debt with a currency that has no backing in value or substance. No contract in Common law is valid unless it involves an exchange of "good &valuable consideration." Unpayable debt transfers power and control to the sovereign power structure that has no interest in money, law, equity or justice because they have so much wealth already.

Their lust is for power and control. Since the inception of central banking, they have controlled the fates of nations.

The Federal Reserve System is based on the Canon law and the principles of sovereignty protected in the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. In fact, the international bankers used a "Canon Law Trust" as their model, adding stock and naming it a "Joint Stock Trust." The U.S. Congress had passed a law making it illegal for any legal "person" to duplicate a "Joint Stock Trust" in 1873. The Federal Reserve Act was legislated post-facto (to 1870), although post-facto laws are strictly forbidden by the Constitution. [1:9:3]

The Federal Reserve System is a sovereign power structure separate and distinct from the federal United States government. The Federal Reserve is a maritime lender, and/or maritime insurance underwriter to the federal United States operating exclusively under Admiralty/Maritime law. The lender or underwriter bears the risks, and the Maritime law compelling specific performance in paying the interest, or premiums are the same.

Assets of the debtor can also be hypothecated (to pledge something as a security without taking possession of it) as security by the lender or underwriter. The Federal Reserve Act stipulated that the interest on the debt was to be paid in gold. There was no stipulation in the Federal Reserve Act for ever paying the principle.

Prior to 1913, most Americans owned clear, allodial title to property, free and clear of any liens or mortgages until the Federal Reserve Act (1913) "Hypothecated" all property within the federal United States to the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, -in which the Trustees (stockholders) held legal title. The U.S. citizen (tenant, franchisee) was registered as a "beneficiary" of the trust via his/her birth certificate. In 1933, the federal United States hypothecated all of the present and future properties, assets and labor of their "subjects," the 14th Amendment U.S. citizen, to the Federal Reserve System.

In return, the Federal Reserve System agreed to extend the federal United States corporation all the credit "money substitute" it needed. Like any other debtor, the federal United States government had to assign collateral and security to their creditors as a condition of the loan. Since the federal United States didn't have any assets, they assigned the private property of their "economic slaves", the U.S. citizens as collateral against the unpayable federal debt. They also pledged the unincorporated federal territories, national parks forests, birth certificates, and nonprofit organizations, as collateral against the federal debt. All has already been transferred as payment to the international bankers.

Unwittingly, America has returned to its pre-American Revolution, feudal roots whereby all land is held by a sovereign and the common people had no rights to hold allodial title to property. Once again, We the People are the tenants and sharecroppers renting our own property from a Sovereign in the guise of the Federal Reserve Bank. We the people have exchanged one master for another.

This has been going on for over eighty years without the "informed knowledge" of the American people, without a voice protesting loud enough. Now it's easy to grasp why America is fundamentally bankrupt. Why don't more people own their properties outright?

Why are 90% of Americans mortgaged to the hilt and have little or no assets after all debts and liabilities have been paid? Why does it feel like you are working harder and harder and getting less and less?

We are reaping what has been sown, and the results of our harvest is a painful bankruptcy, and a foreclosure on American property, precious liberties, and a way of life. Few of our elected representatives in Washington, D.C. have dared to tell the truth. The federal United States is bankrupt. Our children will inherit this unpayable debt, and the tyranny to enforce paying it.

America has become completely bankrupt in world leadership, financial credit and its reputation for courage, vision and human rights. This is an undeclared economic war, bankruptcy, and economic slavery of the most corrupt order! Wake up America! Take back your Country."

36. Silver VS Gold - Silver correction coming.


Silver VS Gold - Disconnected price ratio.

Silver should be selling for almost $70 per ounce right now with Gold at $1100 per ounce.

"Throughout world history, only ten times more silver has been mined than gold. If you go back about 1,000 years ago between the years 1000 and 1250, gold was worth ten times more than silver worldwide. From year 1250 to 1792, the gold to silver ratio slowly increased from 10 to 15 and the Coinage Act of 1792 officially defined a gold to silver ratio of 15. The ratio remained at 15 until forty-two years later when the ratio was increased in 1834 to 16, where it remained until silver was demonetized in 1873." (From National Inflation Association)

Right now with Gold at $1116.00 per ounce on Monex this morning (Dec. 12th, 09) and Silver at only $17.18 per ounce, the ratio is 65.03. When Silver corrects this ratio will drop to historic levels and right now would sell for $69.75 per ounce at that ratio.

Is this correction coming? There are many factors that say it will soon take place.

1. The world is awash in fiat currency that has no backing in anything real. Not precious metals, or oil, or land or anything else of real value. Therefore the currencies that are unbacked have NO INTRINSIC VALUE. They are confidence currencies. In other words, they are a CON GAME by the big banksters and criminal governments. People are catching on to that. Right now the con game is about done. There is a huge move to Audit the Federal Reserve, the biggest perpe-traitor of this fraudulent money game.

2. There is a real shortage of Silver. Silver is an industrial precious metal, and unlike gold that gets stashed away as a hedge for wealth, silver gets used up in industrial uses like making electronics, relays, photography, and many other industrial uses. There is not much more silver being found. The manipulation of the prices by big banksters may be designed to reduce the price of silver to make it less profitable to mine.

3. The people are waking up, and running their banks to buy silver now. I have had several people who have cashed out their IRA and 401K savings to buy silver. If that becomes rampant, silver prices will go through the roof.

4. Many high power investment advisors are now saying that Silver is the best investment commodity of the coming decade, and people are listening and taking action before it's too late. The demand for silver for investors is shooting up, and the US mint has quit making Silver Eagles because there isn't enough silver to support the demand.

5. There are billions of ounces of PAPER silver in the form of Short Position silver stocks, that can NOT be fulfilled. Eventually these big bankster con-artists will have to cover their short postitions with real silver. They don't have it. They can't get it. Their banks will fail, just as Bear Stearns failed largely because they were about to be forced to cover their huge short position on silver. That would have exposed the fraud because silver would have gone up radically, maybe as high as $50 per ounce or more just from that one bank failure. So to cover up the potential failure they got bailed out and now JP Morgan holds the bag.

When this fraud comes home to roost where will you be? When this all comes to the knowledge of the general public there will be a panic to get out of dollars and into precious metals. Will you be caught in the panic, or will you have your position secured by owning silver? Will you be trying to buy silver at extremely high prices, or will you be selling silver to those who were not paying attention in time to figure this out and do something about it? 37. Tea Parties Need Teeth. Reviving the Militia of the Several States.

The Tenth-Amendment Resolutions from State Legislatures, the Tea Parties, the Town Hall Meetings, and other manifestations of WE THE PEOPLE’S feedupidness with monkey-business as usual in the Disgrace of Columbia—even the massive congregation on the Mall last September—are some of the most enlightening, encouraging, and energizing developments that American patriots have witnessed in a long time. For these events are all premised on the idea: “We don’t want you!”—that WE THE PEOPLE do not want any more, indeed they demand a great deal less, interference in their lives from rogue public officials in the General Government.

These events notwithstanding, the problem remains that too many among WE THE PEOPLE will start but then stop right there, with “We don’t want you!” That is not enough.

The complaint “We don’t want you!” needs to go further, to the resolve, “We won’t have you!” — that WE THE PEOPLE intend to rid themselves of the General Government’s interference.

And to make this resolve effective, WE THE PEOPLE need to design and put into effect remedial action, so that they can say with finality: “We don’t need you!”

The sequence must be—

(i) We don’t NEED you!” which makes it realistic to say:
(ii) We don’t WANT you!” which combined with the ability to make WE THE PEOPLE’S wants effective will lead to the necessary and sufficient action:
(iii) We won’t HAVE you!” and finally will yield the desired result:
(iv) We are RID of you!”
If WE THE PEOPLE have the ability they can give “teeth” to the desire, take the necessary action, and thereby accomplish their goal.

Madame Speaker, I rise to introduce the Free Competition in Currency Act of 2009. Currency, or money, is what allows civilization to flourish. In the absence of money, barter is the name of the game; if the farmer needs shoes, he must trade his eggs and milk to the cobbler and hope that the cobbler needs eggs and milk. Money makes the transaction process far easier. Rather than having to search for someone with reciprocal wants, the farmer can exchange his milk and eggs for an agreed-upon medium of exchange with which he can then purchase shoes.

This medium of exchange should satisfy certain properties: it should be durable, that is to say, it does not wear out easily; it should be portable, that is, easily carried; it should be divisible into units usable for every-day transactions; it should be recognizable and uniform, so that one unit of money has the same properties as every other unit; it should be scarce, in the economic sense, so that the extant supply does not satisfy the wants of everyone demanding it; it should be stable, so that the value of its purchasing power does not fluctuate wildly; and it should be reproducible, so that enough units of money can be created to satisfy the needs of exchange.

Over millennia of human history, gold and silver have been the two metals that have most often satisfied these conditions, survived the market process, and gained the trust of billions of people. Gold and silver are difficult to counterfeit, a property which ensures they will always be accepted in commerce. It is precisely for this reason that gold and silver are anathema to governments. A supply of gold and silver that is limited in supply by nature cannot be inflated, and thus serves as a check on the growth of government. Without the ability to inflate the currency, governments find themselves constrained in their actions, unable to carry on wars of aggression or to appease their overtaxed citizens with bread and circuses.

On the desk in my office I have a sign that says: “Don't steal – the government hates competition.” Indeed, any power a government arrogates to itself, it is loathe to give back to the people. Just as we have gone from a constitutionally-instituted national defense consisting of a limited army and navy bolstered by militias and letters of marque and reprisal, we have moved from a system of competing currencies to a government-instituted banking cartel that monopolizes the issuance of currency. In order to reintroduce a system of competing currencies, there are three steps that must be taken to produce a legal climate favorable to competition.

History will look back at the artificially high gold to silver ratio of the past century as an anomaly, caused by the dollar bubble and the world being deceived into believing that fiat currencies are real money, when in fact they're all an illusion. Next decade, the fiat currency experiment will end badly in a currency crisis. The wealthiest people will be those who bought silver today and were smart enough to research and pick the best silver mining stocks.

While the vast majority of the gold ever produced remains sitting in vaults, 95% of the silver produced has been consumed by industry for thousands of applications in such tiny amounts that most of it will never be recycled and seen on the market again. Nobody knows the exact above ground supply of silver today, but most likely it is somewhere in the neighborhood of 1 billion ounces. That's a total worldwide market value of only $17.4 billion, when the world has over $7 trillion in foreign currency reserves, mostly in fiat currencies that they will need to diversify out of due to rampant inflation.

Besides the fact that the world has been ignoring the monetary value of silver, silver prices are artificially low due to a large concentrated naked short position. It's not a coincidence that the day silver reached its multi-decade high of over $21 per ounce in March of 2008, was the same day Bear Stearns failed. Bear Stearns was a holder of a massive short position in silver. In our opinion, this was likely a naked short position because there is nobody in the world who owns such a large amount of silver for Bear Stearns to have borrowed.

The reason why we believe the Federal Reserve was so eager to orchestrate a bailout of Bear Stearns, is because Bear Stearns was on the verge of being forced to cover their silver short position. Because the silver market is so small and tightly held, if Bear Stearns was forced to cover their short position, silver prices could've potentially rose to $50 per ounce or higher overnight. The world would've seen how economically unstable our country is and confidence in the U.S. dollar would've rapidly deteriorated.

JP Morgan still holds the silver short position they inherited from Bear Stearns. The concentrated naked short position in silver today is the largest short position in the history of all commodities, as a percentage of its market size. Eventually, JP Morgan will have to cover this short position or it could jeopardize their existence.

The best evidence that the short position in silver is naked and not backed by real silver, is the differential between what silver trades for on the Comex and what real people are willing to pay for physical silver on eBay. Every hour on eBay, there are dozens of one ounce silver coins selling for approximately $25. That's about a 43% premium over the current spot price of silver. With so much demand for physical silver, we doubt the silver shorts in the paper market will be able to manipulate prices downward for much longer. A major short squeeze could be right around the corner and silver could take off in a way that shocks even those who are most bullish.

Barack Obama is on track to have the most spectacularly failed presidency since Woodrow Wilson. In the modern era, we've seen several failed presidencies--led by Jimmy Carter and LBJ. Failed presidents have one strong common trait-- they are repudiated, in the vernacular, spat out.

Of course, LBJ wisely took the exit ramp early, avoiding a shove into oncoming traffic by his own party. Richard Nixon indeed resigned in disgrace, yet his reputation as a statesman has been partially restored by his triumphant overture to China.

But, Barack Obama is failing. Failing big. Failing fast. And failing everywhere: foreign policy, domestic initiatives, and most importantly, in forging connections with the American people. The incomparable Dorothy Rabinowitz in the Wall Street Journal put her finger on it: He is failing because he has no understanding of the American people, and may indeed loathe them. Fred Barnes of the Weekly Standard says he is failing because he has lost control of his message, and is overexposed. Clarice Feldman of American Thinker produced a dispositive commentary showing that Obama is failing because fundamentally he is neither smart nor articulate; his intellectual dishonesty is conspicuous by its audacity and lack of shame.

But, there is something more seriously wrong: How could a new president riding in on a wave of precedented promise and goodwill have forfeited his tenure and become a lame duck in six months? His poll ratings are in free fall. In generic balloting, the Republicans have now seized a five point advantage. This truly is unbelievable. What's going on?

No narrative. Obama doesn't have a narrative. No, not a narrative about himself. He has a self-narrative, much of it fabricated, cleverly disguised or written by someone else. But this self-narrative is isolated and doesn't connect with us. He doesn't have an American narrative that draws upon the rest of us. All successful presidents have a narrative about the American character that intersects with their own where they display a command of history and reveal an authenticity at the core of their personality that resonates in a positive endearing way with the majority of Americans. We admire those presidents whose narratives not only touch our own, but who seem stronger, wiser, and smarter than we are. Presidents we admire are aspirational peers, even those whose politics don't align exactly with our own: Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, Harry Truman, Ike, and Reagan.

But not this president. It's not so much that he's a phony, knows nothing about economics, and is historically illiterate and woefully small minded for the size of the task--all contributory of course. It's that he's not one of us. And whatever he is, his profile is fuzzy and devoid of content, like a cardboard cutout made from delaminated corrugated paper.

Moreover, he doesn't command our respect and is unable to appeal to our own common sense. His notions of right and wrong are repugnant and how things work just don't add up. They are not existential. His descriptions of the world we live in don't make sense and don't correspond with our experience.

In the meantime, while we've been struggling to take a measurement of this man, he's dissed just about every one of us--financiers, energy producers, banks, insurance executives, police officers, doctors, nurses, hospital administrators, post office workers, and anybody else who has a non-green job. Expect Obama to lament at his last press conference in 2012:

"For those of you I offended, I apologize. For those of you who were not offended, you just didn't give me enough time; if only I'd had a second term, I could have offended you too."

Mercifully, the Founders at the Constitutional Convention in 1787 devised a useful remedy for such a desperate state--staggered terms for both houses of the legislature and the executive. An equally abominable Congress can get voted out next year. With a new Congress, there's always hope of legislative gridlock until we vote for president again two short years after that.

What does St. Paul teach in this epistle?

The Jews and Gentiles who had been converted to the Christian faith were disputing among themselves at Rome, in regard to abstinence and the use of certain kinds of food, reproaching each other severely; the Jews boasted that the Savior, according to promise, was born of their nation, thus claiming Him from the Gentiles, who, in their turn, reproached the Jews for their ingratitude in having crucified Him. To restore harmony St. Paul shows that each had reason, the Jews and Gentiles alike, to praise God, to whose grace and goodness they owed all; that each had in Him a Redeemer in whom they could hope for salvation; and he warns them not to deprive themselves of that hope by contentions. By these words the Apostle also teaches that we too, have great reason to praise God, and to thank Him for calling us, whose forefathers were heathens, to the Christian faith, and to guard against losing our salvation by pride, envy, impurity, etc.

Why should we read the Scriptures?

That we may know what we are to believe, and do in order to be saved, as all Scripture inspired by God is profitable to teach, to reprove, to correct, to instruct in justice (11 Tim. 3:16); that we may learn from what Christ has done for us, and the saints for Christ, to be patient in our sufferings, and to be consoled and encouraged by their example. To derive this benefit from the Scriptures, the Catholic must read them by the light of that Spirit through whose assistance they came into existence, who lives and remains for ever with the Church: that is, the light of the Holy Ghost must be sought, that their meaning may be read according to the sense of the Church and not be explained according to the reader's judgment. For he who reads the holy Scriptures by the light of his own private judgment, must, as experience shows, of necessity diverge from the right path, become entangled in manifold doubts, and at last, lose the faith entirely. For this reason the Catholic Church has very properly limited the reading of the Bible, not as has been falsely asserted, unconditionally forbidden it, but she allows the reading of those editions only, which are accompanied by notes and explanations that the unity of faith may not be disturbed, and that among Catholics there may not be the terrible bewilderment of the human intellect which has taken place among the different heretical sects who have even declared murder, bigamy and impurity to be permissible on the authority of the Bible. We are to consider also, that Christ never commanded the Bible to be written or read, and that not the readers but the hearers and the followers of the word of God by which is meant those who hear the word of God in sermons, and keep it, will be saved.

Why is God called a God of patience, of consolation, and of hope?

He is called a God of patience because He awaits our repentance, of consolation, because He gives us grace to be patient in crosses and afflictions, and so consoles us inwardly, that we become not faint-hearted; of hope, because He gives us the virtue of hope, and because He desires to be Himself the reward we are to expect after this life.

ASPIRATION: O God of patience, of consolation and of hope, fill Our hearts with peace and joy, and grant that we may become perfect in all good, and by faith, hope and charity, attain the promised salvation.

GOSPEL: (Mt. 11:2-10). At that time, when John had heard in prison the works of Christ, sending two of his disciples, he said to him: Art thou he that art to come, or do we look for another? And Jesus making answer, said to them: Go and relate to John what you have heard and seen. The blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead rise again, the poor have the gospel preached to them: and blessed is he that shall not be scandalized in me. And when they went their way, Jesus began to say to the multitudes concerning John, What went you out into the desert to see? a reed shaken with the wind? But what went you out to see? a man clothed in soft garments? Behold, they that are clothed in soft garments are in the houses of kings. But what went you out to see? a prophet? yea I tell you, and more than a prophet. For this is he of whom it is written, Behold, I send my Angel before thy face, who shall prepare thy way before thee.

Why was John in prison?

He was in prison, and lost his life, because he had rebuked king Herod for his adulterous marriage with his brother's wife (Mt. 14:310). Truth, as the proverb says, is certainly a very beautiful mother, but she usually bears a very ugly daughter: Hatred. St. John experienced that speaking the truth very often arouses hatred and enmity against the speaker. Let us learn from him to speak the truth always, when duty requires it, even if it brings upon us the greatest misfortunes, for, if with St. John we patiently bear persecution, with St. John we shall become martyrs for truth.

Why did St. John send his disciples to Christ?

That they should learn from Christ, who had become illustrious by His teachings and miracles, that He was really the promised Messiah, the Savior of the world, whom they should follow.

Why did Christ say to the disciples of St. John: "Go and say to John, the blind see, the lame walk, etc."?

That they should, by His miracles, judge Him to be the Messiah because the prophets had predicted that He would work such miracles (Is. 35:5-6). "Christ," says St. Cyril, "proved that He was the Messiah by the grandeur as well as by the number of His miracles."

Why does Christ add: "And blessed is he who shall not be scandalized in me"?

Christ used these words in reference to those who would be scandalized by His poverty, humility and ignominious death on the cross, and who for these reasons would doubt and despise Him, and cast Him away; though "man," as St. Gregory says, "owes all the more love to the Lord, his God, the more humiliations He has borne for him."

What was our Lord's object in the questions He asked concerning St. John?

His object was to remove from St. John all suspicion of failing in faith in Him; and to praise the perseverance with which, although imprisoned and threatened with death, he continued to fill his office of preacher, thus constituting him an example to all preachers, confessors and superiors, that they may never be deterred by human respect, or fear of man, or other temporal considerations, from courageously fulfilling their duties. Our Lord commended also rigorous penance, exhibited by St. John's coarse garments and simple food, that we may learn, from his example, penance and mortification.

Why does Christ say that John was "more than a prophet"?

Because St. John was foretold by the prophet Malachias as was no other prophet; because of all the prophets he was the only one who with his own eyes saw Christ and could point Him out, and was the one to baptize Him: and because like an angel, a messenger of God, he announced the coming of the Savior, and prepared the way for the Lord.

How did St. John prepare the way for the Savior?

By his sermons on penance, and by his own penitential life He endeavored to move the hearts of the Jews, that by amending their lives, they might prepare to receive the grace of the Messiah, for God will not come with His grace into our hearts if we do not prepare His way by true repentance.

ASPIRATION: O Lord Jesus, by the praise Thou didst accord to Thy forerunner St. John, for his firmness and austerities, inflame our hearts with love to imitate his steadfastness and penance, that we may never do anything to please man which may be displeasing to Thee; grant us also Thy grace that we too, like St. John, may have those who are confided to our care, instructed in the Christian doctrine.

CONSOLATION IN SUFFERING

"The God of patience and of comfort, the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing" (Rom. 15:5,13).

What gives us the greatest consolation in adversities?

The strong and fervent belief that each and every thing that happens to us, comes to us for our own good from God, and that whatever evil befalls us, is by the will or permission of God. Good things and evil, life and death, poverty and riches, are from God (Ecclus. 11:14). If we have received good things at the hand of God (Job 2:10), saith the pious job in his affliction, "why should we not receive evil?"

We should be fully convinced that without the permission of God not a single hair of our head shall perish (Lk. 21:18), much less can any other evil be done to us by man or devil (Job 1); we should have a steadfast confidence that if we ask Him, God can and will assist us in our sufferings, if it be for our salvation. Can a woman forget her infant, so as not to have pity on the son of her womb? And if she should forget, yet will not I forget thee. Behold, I have graven thee in my hands (Is. 49:15-16); we should hope for abundant reward in the future life, which we will merit by patience in our sufferings, for that which is at present momentary and light of our tribulation, worketh for us above measure exceedingly an eternal weight of glory (II Cor. 4:17); we should remember that all complaints and murmurs against the dispensation of God are useless, and lead only to harm and shame; Who hath resisted Him, and hath had peace? (Job 9:4) we should have a vivid remembrance of our sins, for which we have long since deserved the eternal punishments of hell - hence the well-known saying of St. Augustine: O Lord, here cut, here burn, but spare me in eternity. No other way leads to the kingdom of heaven than the way of the cross, which Christ Himself, His sorrowing mother, and all the saints had to tread. Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and so to enter into His glory? (Lk. 24:26) Through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God (Acts 14:21). And we should not forget that sorrows and adversities are signs of God's love, and manifest proofs of being His chosen ones. Whom the Lord loveth He chastiseth, and He scourgeth every son whom He receiveth (Heb. 12:6. compare 7-11).

PRAYER IN SORROW: O almighty, kind and merciful God! who hast said: "Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me" (Ps. 49:15), behold relying upon Thy word, I take refuge in Thee in my trouble. Give honor to Thy name, therefore, and deliver me, if it be pleasing to Thee and beneficial for me, that all may know, Thou art our only help. Amen.


46. The Real Santa Claus. Yes he really walked this earth.
Today is the yearly feast of Saint Nicholas, Bishop and Confessor, and Cannonized Saint of the Catholic Church.

Here is a little history about the real Santa from the "New Roman Missal by the Reverend Fr. F. X. Lasance 1937.

December 6th.

St. Nocholas Archbishop of Myra in Asia Minor, from the childlike innocence of his own life, and his devout care for the young, is looked upon as the patron of children. He died in the middle of the Fourth Century, and seven hundred years later his holy relics were translated to Bari in Italy. Because of the power he exercised over flames, we pray that through his intercession we may be preserved from the flames of hell. He is remembered for the money which he threw in a window that three young girls might have a dowry for their marriage. Because of this gift his name has become associated with giving and children thank Santa Claus (or St. nicholas) for their presents at Christmastime.

Few saints enjoy such great popularity and few are credited with so many miracles. Sts. John Chrysostom, Peter Damian, and Bonaventure have vied in eloquence with one another in telling of the merits and the goodness of Saint Nicholas. Born at Patara in Lycia, he visited the Thebaid, ruled the great monastery, was imprisoned for a time for his faith, and ended his life as archbishop of Myra.

It is doubtless the story of his restoring life to the children put in the salting tub which caused him to become the patron and the annual benefactor of school children. St. Bonaventure tells the story in a sermon. St. Nicholas was, it seems, on his way to the Council of Nicaea, when he entered an inn whose owner, not content with having killed two youg boys for the sake of their meagre purse, had cut them up and was about to sell them piecemeal to his clients. The bishop restored them to life and then converted this murderer.

The first thing to remember is that precious metal is only a medium of exchange. You can take all the gold and silver in the world, and dump it into the deepest hole in the ocean where nobody could ever get at it again, and nobody is going to starve to death the next week. So remember that during the great depression it was food, and water, and other essentials that were very valuable, even more so than precious metals. In such times as are coming, the precious metal of choice might be lead. In any case, you need to sell your silver before everyone else gets the same idea. When J. Paul Getty was the richest man in the world someone asked him how he got that way. He said "Buy low and sell too soon." So when the price of a medium sized family home is around 500 ounces of Silver, trade for real estate.

In the early 1980s you could buy a home for around $1000 Silver dollars, because they were worth $50 each and the housing market was in the toilet. That is going to happen again, and is happening right now, but silver won't stop at $50. Investment advisors are saying this time, because it's a world wide problem, we might see silver where gold is now and gold might go over $6000 per ounce. One thing is for sure. The paper trash currency supply will continue to expand at exponential rates.

Are you earning and/or saving Federal Reserve Notes? Do you have CDs or savings accounts that are enumerated in Federal Reserve Notes or another Fiat currency? Have you asked your local bank if they have any gold or silver you can buy? (The answer will shock you) Do you know the history of the Great depression and what happened to fiat currency during 1929 to 1933? In other words, fiat currencies are a Con Game by the big banksters, to get your wealth by devaluing money.

How big is the problem?

In previous currency collapses as in Germany from 1919 to 1923 the problem was limited to one country usually. Now the problem is world wide because the banksters have floated fiat unbacked currencies in virtually every country. The Federal Reserve note in the US, the Euro all over Europe and the UK, and virtually every other major currency. In North America they want to replace the FRN with the Amero "dollar" and make it the new currency for the North American Union, destroying the Sovereignty of Canada, the US and Mexico in one stroke. Just go to Google and type Amero Dollar in the search box if you don't believe it.

What happens when a fiat currency fails?

Usually there is a fairly long steady climb of precious metals for a few months, then when hyper inflation kicks in the public begins to catch on that their currency is in trouble. This causes the precious metal values to go vertical. Of course by this time it's almost impossible to accumulate precious metals, because the crowd always rushes in at the end of a currency collapse, and they all get slaughtered by paying way too much for their gold and silver. Consider yourself blessed to find this information while there is still at least a few months to do something about it. Once the psyche of the nation and world comes to the realization that paper money is valueless, it's too late, and that is the time to be selling your precious metals.

Right now there is only about 300 million ounces available, because every time someone makes a computer, cellphone, Ipod, lightbulb, relay or any other electronic device it uses up some silver, and they are not finding much more of it.

The West Point mint stopped stamping Silver Eagles in April of 2008 for about a month because they ran out of Silver planchets to stamp. Only 13 dealers buy from that mint, and they are all now on a quota of about 25% of what they would be buying because there just isn't enough silver to supply the demand. (Don't worry. We are working with the largest of those dealers and they would like to buy 400,000 coins PER WEEK. They have plenty in stock.)

The limiting factor will be price more than supply so get yours yesterday. Do you realize now that fully HALF of the available supply of silver left in the world is in the form of the American Silver Eagle coin, which is recognized world wide as a guaranteed assay by the US mint?

After "Tricky Dick" took us off the Gold Standard in 1971, in the next 9 years Gold gained 24 times it's value and stopped in 1980 at $850 per ounce. In the exact same period of time Silver gained 39 times it's value and Silver wasn't rare then!

That means that if you were worth $1 Million in 1971, and you realized what Nixon had done and decided to protect yourself by buying 10% of your wealth or $100,000 in Gold, then even if you lost the other 90% or $900,000 and in 1980 all you had left was the Gold you had bought, you were now worth $2.4 MILLION. If you had bought Silver instead of Gold, you were now worth $3.9 Million.

Gold has again made big gains, and Silver, like always, will lag behind gold and then outperform gold in terms of percentage of gain. Check the history of precious metals, and try to prove me wrong. And here is the big clincher: "No State shall... coin Money; emit Bills. of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts;..." Article 1 Section 10 of the Constitution for the United States.

In 1971 Richard "Tricky Dick" Nixon destroyed the value of paper currency in the USA by taking us off the gold standard, so that the paper currency is not backed by anything of real value. Paper FRN’s are not worth the paper they are printed on. They can not be redeemed for gold and silver payable to the bearer on demand like the constitution dictates.

In other words paper currency is a CON-fidence currency. It relies on the confidence of the people using it, and the world is rapidly losing their confidence in the US FRN. The bankster con game is almost over. Every time in history that the real value has been stripped from currency, that currency has gone into hyper inflation in a matter of a few months to a few years.

That is starting to happen right now with the FRN funny money. The FRN is losing value compared to Silver and Gold, and also compared to virtually every other fiat currency in the world. In the seventies after Nixon’s move, the value of silver gradually rose to 50 FRN’s per ounce, and gold went to an all time high of almost 850 FRN’s.

Right now today gold is over 850 FRN’s but silver will be making far better gains than gold because it is an INDUSTRIAL precious metal and is being used up rapidly in the production of every electronic device being built. Silver could be hundreds of FRN’s per ounce in a few months, and Silver always out performs gold in a currency crisis.

Do you understand how currency comes into circulation in the US?

The federal reserve goes to the US mint and buys the paper at the cost of printing or roughly 3 or 4 cents per paper bill REGARDLESS OF FACE VALUE. Then they "LOAN" that "currency" into circulation to the member banks AT FACE VALUE and AT INTEREST. How would YOU like to have a racket like that? In other words, if it's not written in the Constitution, the US government doesn't have the power, but only the States and the People do. Where in the US Constitution does it say that Congress has the power to delegate away it's authority to coin money and regulate the value thereof? It doesn't. That means simply that Congress had NO POWER to delegate away their authority to any "federal reserve" or any central bank. It's been a fraud from the beginning, and it's still being done by fraud.

Using the Lawful Money of the United States to finance the Ron Paul Revolution is an idea whose time has come.

4. Secret Exposed: How the Google Search Engine Really Works

While we don't often think about - or even care - how the Google search engine works, it is very important for an online marketer who is using search engine optimization, or natural search marketing for their online business to understand the basic principles that drive Google.

There are three main parts to Google: Googlebot, The Indexer, and the Query Processor. Each of these three parts is crucial to online businesses, believe it or not. Let's take a deep look at each of these Google elements to see how they work.

Googlebot is the search engine spider that comes to your website and spiders your pages. It isn't an actual spider, of course.

It actually works more like a web browser by calling a server and requesting pages, and downloading them - just as you do when you open your browser, type in an URI, and then the web page loads.

Googlebot, however, is run by big number of computers and performs this task much faster than one user could on their home or work personal computer. And Googlebot doesn't know if a website exists until a URL is put into their Add URL form, or until they find a link point to that site on another web page.

When Googlebot comes to a page, they take all the links from that page, and put them in a queue for crawling, and repeat this process over and over again. Once Googlebot has found a link, and downloaded the page, it hands that page off to the Indexer.

The Indexer stores the pages in Google's Index Data base. The Index then sorts all of the pages in its data base, alphabetically, by looking at all of the keywords on the pages. The Indexer does not pay any attention to what Google calls stop words, such as is, on, or, why, how, etc. It just pays attention to more important keyword type words.

The Indexer, after Indexing pages, waits for the Google Query Processor to ask it for a list of documents. A keyword is given to the Query Processor, which in turn asks the Indexer for a list of stored websites contain that keyword.

The Indexer then supplies the Query processor with a list of the documents, and the Query processor presents the documents to the user who requested the keyphrase.

You see, each element is important to the others. It all starts with the Googlebot finding your web page link on another site, or by you going to Google and using the Add form to submit your site.

16. Google Gets Voice
Google GrandCentral has grown all up is being relaunched as Google Voice. This service will continue in beta testing with many new features. Grand Central was a start up "one-number access" telephone service that was purchased by Google soon after its debut.

This service will be styled similar to the Skype telephony business model, in that some of the calls are free, and international long distance will be offered at attractive rates way below what normal phone charges would be. As an example, calls to Canada reportedly will be one cent per minute.

This will be a great service for entrepreneurs, solopreneurs, and small office/home office workers, which now includes distance workers, telecommuters and digital nomads. Get in line and queue up for a free Google Voice number.

17. Depression Cooking Teaches
Check out Google Trends this morning, and you will see that Great Depression Cooking tops the charts. The television news anchors are starting to own up to the fact that we are in a depression, and not just your ordinary run of the mill recession.

Imports are down 24% and the economy in the US alone shrank over 6% in just one month. If you think there is any good news in this, it probably is only the fact we need to learn to individually become self reliant again. We can't sustain an economy where the only growth is in government.

If you have already lost your job, and are scratching your head as to what you will do when the unemployment insurance runs out, you may have figured out that it probably won't be a job like you had before. We are headed back to a more mercantile style society, where we each make and trade goods and services. Do you believe you can now start your own small office-home office based on new skills found learned and linked on the Internet?

18. SpiderWeb Will Rock the Web
Whoa Baby! This blog is getting whiskers. Anyone that has followed my path will know that I now have been heavy into educating myself about Internet marketing. Thus, the reason for no posts.

But I have been busy investigating. One of the schemes is a beta program known as The SpideWeb Marketing System. If you have seen it in passing, but did not consider it...keep looking. This had the potential to be the next big monetizing scheme for the web.


Many have tried to create a self-sustained or auto-pilot system. This supposedly started out with 12 streams of income, but now has 22. I have a gut feeling you have to work it like any other business.

It still is in beta, so don't hope for much. I had numerous conversation with the owners and management team of this system about creating an inner circle training program. Alas, everyone wants something for nothing. You can generate free leads, but then you have to know what to do with them.

All the information in this post was gleaned from 45n5. My belief is that Mark combines some marketing savvy with geekdom knowhow. He even writes simple, but useful utility programs and then gives them away for free on the blog. Here is a recent link to one he dubs "Keyword Scrubber".

45n5.com has turned into one of the few blogs I simply must check out on a daily basis. Now Mark is committed to deciphering Affiliate Marketing as a top priority. Another project he is combining with this effort is his personal mission to produce and post a video every day in 2008.

I think with 365 videos in the planning, his little experiment is one to watch for trends, plus the techniques, tips and tricks he is bound to uncover along the way. So, if you want to make 365 videos in one year, watch this guy in 2008 and I think you will learn something.

Welcome to the New Year! I have been spending the last week planning for 2008, which has included changes to my blogging style. If you follow my blogs, you know that I have decided to concentrate on Digital Nomads and The Rugged Notebooks Blog as my main focus for blogging, and with less frequent posting to this blog and The Sovereign Journey.

This is not for a lack or loss of interest, but merely a necessity of time management. Regardless, my blog niche revolves around the central theme of mobility and using technology to be independent. So, you can always check back here and/or catch my more frequent updates at the Rugged Notebooks or Digital Nomads sites. My plan this year is to move to private domains.

One thing I have been doing is writing more focused posts...themed, if you will, or a series of posts on a subject of interest. Recently, this has had a major slant towards telecom, and in particular new gadgets like MagicJack and VoIP telephoney solutions like Google GrandCentral.

I am finding that being more focused on a particular subject area makes it easier and more interesting to research, test, review, and write. I think my readers appreciate it a well and it is helping in the SERPS.

21. Twelve Step Program for Email Addicts

I saw this over at the BigString 2.0 website and thought it was good advice. BigString is an interesting concept in itself, which I will let you discover for yourself. These 12 items have been edited somewhat, so not to get dinged for duplicate content. There were some typos in the original text anyway. Enjoy.

1. Do not send email when you are angry. Wait until you calm down before you send that email. Feelings and thoughts can be difficult to interpret and easily misconstrued.

2. Never send a sarcastic email that could be taken out of context. Sarcasm and email do not mix. You can easily offend someone in an email without intent to do so.

3. Do not send email gossip. You never know where the email will end up. Just make a commitment to yourself not to participate in any gossip.

4. Never end significant relationships via email. Email is the equivalent of an electronic paper trail. Not good for any sour ending, whether business or personal.

5. If you don't want your boss or coworkers to see it, better not send that email from work.

6. Never put anything in writing that may come back to haunt you. A good overall policy. Not just for email.

7. Never, ever, hit ‘Reply to All’ when you just want to send an email to one individual.

8. Don’t email pictures of yourself to others. Especially, online acquaintances and complete strangers.

9. Don’t make promises or commitments via email that you cannot or will not keep.

10. When you send attachments, be sure that you have selected the correct files and documents.

11. Good advice from New York Governor Elliot Spitzer, “Never write when you can talk. Never talk when you can nod. And never put anything in an email.â€

12. Try BigString recallable email. If you do happen to make errors...the recallable, erasable, and non-forwardable features will help to correct such mistakes.

This is the good stuff, it's an addendum to the post on "30 Websites in 30 Days", and Mark calls this his YouTube-Ebay-Amazon Affiliate Website Mashup Thingy.



I have had a few email exchanges with Mark, and these are a few of his cautionary thoughts by way of how he has explained the ideas behind how it should work. Most people will not succeed with this mashup concept, or any other website scripting without the underlying concept and knowledge (or experience from learning) of how to build such a niche site.

Cranking out "out of the box" and rubber stamp solutions is what everybody else is doing. Doing the same thing that everyone else is doing online will bring the same results...which happens to be not making any money online. This also happens to mirror Einstein's theory of insanity, and he was no dummy. It's also making many people wealthy for some pretty worthless online information products.

So, if you use the script out of the box, most of your money will be made from luck or successful keyword research (aka) what words and topics you use to build these niche minisites in mass production.

25. How to Build 30 Websites in 30 Days

It may sound implausible, but it is not impossible. Follow this Digital Nomad and you know that just feeding the blogs is not going to cut it anymore. Blogging should be part of your online marketing network, but not a diversion.

I have been searching heavy for the folks that are making it online and not the wannabes. One such source is 45n5.com authored by Mark Wielgus. This guy tells it straight. You have to hunt an peck to find the good stuff, and you will have to piece it together, but I think a good start is on this website.

Mark will show you how to find a niche, create a website in 10 minutes, and then shove it in the pipeline with some SEO tricks. Theoretically, there is no reason why you could not do this everyday for a month and then have 30 minisites up and running for affiliate programs in thirty days. That's if you want to have a website between you and the merchant.



I am finding that you maybe don't even need a website to market affiliate programs, but you do have to commit to spending some money for Google Adword campaigns. Better have a pad and pen ready.

American Jobs: Going, Going...

Corporations are escalating efforts to ship out jobs that pay well and build the middle class—and now they are aiming their axes at workers in the nation’s fast-growing white-collar sector.

The U.S. recession that began in March 2001 officially ended in November 2001, say the National Bureau of Economic Research and other analysts.

So why are so many workers still out of jobs?

“We’ve declared victory over the recession, and we’re still laying off a couple hundred thousand workers a month,” says Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.). “If it weren’t so painful for so many people who are out of work, it would be hilarious. But it isn’t.”

The U.S. economy has 3.2 million fewer jobs today than it did when President George W. Bush took office, including 2.5 million fewer manufacturing jobs. Bush appears headed for the dubious distinction of being the first president since Herbert Hoover to preside over a decline in total employment during his term in office.

In the past three years, nearly one in five U.S. workers was laid off from the job, according to The Disposable Worker: Living in a Job-Loss Economy, a Rutgers University¡V University of Connecticut report released in late July. Among workers laid off from full-time work, roughly one-fourth were earning less than $40,000 annually, the report finds.

In July, a total of 15 million U.S. workers were either unemployed, underemployed or too discouraged to job hunt, according to the Labor Department.

In contrast, within a year after the official end of the last recession in March 1991, the nation had embarked on six straight months of solid job growth.

This time, say economists, there are crucial differences: Companies are sending well-paying manufacturing and service jobs to countries with few, if any, protections for workers and the environment. And these jobs are probably not coming back.

“The movement of jobs and production overseas is handcuffing the recovery,” according to Mark Xandi, chief economist at Economy.com, as quoted in the New York Times.

“With NAFTA, the World Trade Organization and other trade deals of the last decade, American corporations are now tapping into a global supply of workers who can be trained to do everything from design to production, maintenance to marketing,” says Jeff Faux, economist and founding president of the Economic Policy Institute. “And while these workers become more productive, their pay doesn’t rise, because in many of these countries, to be a labor organizer means you risk winding up in a ditch with a bullet in your head.”

American jobs sent out of the country aren’t likely to return anytime soon. “As long as employers can take advantage of much lower labor costs in other countries, there’s no compelling reason to bring back many of these well-paying jobs,” says Ron Hira, an engineer and assistant professor of public policy at Rochester Institute of Technology. “Policymakers seem to be at a loss as to what to do about this problem.”

Meanwhile, the Bush administration directs multimillion-dollar tax cuts to the wealthy while supporting trade laws that encourage offshore outsourcing. And even as Bush opposes unemployment insurance extensions for some 1 million Americans who have exhausted their benefits, his administration refuses to embrace job-creating programs that would repair the nation’s infrastructure and help balance devastated state budgets.

“The Bush administration doesn’t seem to care about jobs,” says Center for Economic and Policy Research co-founder Dean Baker. “To retain and create jobs, there have to be policy changes, and I don’t think this administration is willing to make them.”

Manufacturing: America’s Foundation Is Crumbling

Manufacturing jobs traditionally have provided high wages and good benefits that allow workers to care for their families. But 2.5 million manufacturing jobs have disappeared since President Bush took office in early 2001.

Multinational corporations are transferring jobs to countries where workers earn low wages and have few or no protections. And small U.S. businesses are laying off workers or shutting their doors because they can’t meet foreign competitors’ prices.

African American workers have been hit particularly hard. Because of manufacturing job losses, the unemployment rate among African Americans is rising twice as fast as it is for whites and faster than in any downturn since the mid-1970s. “The number of jobs and the types of jobs that have been lost has severely diminished the standing of many blacks in the middle class,” says William Lucy, president of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists and AFSCME secretary-treasurer.

Manufacturing job loss starts the downward spiral

The loss of good manufacturing jobs has ripped apart communities and permanently lowered living standards for families throughout the United States, including in Rockford, Ill., 70 miles from Chicago. The northern Illinois city is historically second only to Cleveland as a center for machine tooling, the making of tools used in machine manufacturing.

Machine tooling, which traditionally employs the most highly skilled manufacturing workers including members of the Machinists and UAW, is the bedrock of America’s manufacturing industry.

But the bedrock is crumbling. The Rockford area lost more than 20 percent of its manufacturing jobs—about 10,000—between May 2000 and 2003, according to MBG Information Services President and Economist Charles McMillion’s analysis of Department of Labor data.
General manufacturing jobs have been among those lost in Rockford, including jobs held by Steelworkers Local 745 members at the Goodyear tire plant. USWA members at Goodyear now number 750, down from 1,650 in 1999, before the corporation shipped the jobs to Asia and South America.

But most manufacturing jobs lost in Rockford have been in machine tooling. At Greenlee/Textron, which makes drill bits and tools for electrical contractors, about 180 Machinists now represented by IAM Local 1553 are employed today, down from about 900 in the late 1980s. The 112-year-old crown jewel of Rockford machine tooling—Ingersoll International—declared bankruptcy this spring and laid off 300 employees in Rockford and 70 in Michigan, leaving only skeleton crews of managers and a few contract workers.

“The lesson of Rockford,” says Faux, “is it disproves the free traders’ argument that America could afford to lose manufacturing jobs in areas like textiles and steel because we would ultimately triumph in global competition by making the things hardest to make. In fact, those things are machine tools—and we’re losing them.”

A loss of manufacturing jobs reverberates throughout the community—and ultimately the nation. When manufacturing factories aren’t being built, maintained or expanded, jobs disappear in areas such as construction.

“Our union has about 30 percent unemployment,” says Mark Bramble, business agent for Electrical Workers Local 364 in Rockford. “Guys burn through their unemployment, lose all their benefits, get divorced and then go where the grass looks greener or settle for working as a greeter at Wal-Mart.”

A question of national security

There’s a sense of betrayal in Rockford these days. “Free trade was sold to America with the line that it helps us export more goods,” says Eric Anderberg, who manages his family’s 37-year-old machine tool company, Dial Machines Inc. “But what’s happened is the exportation of our jobs and means of production so multinational corporations can exploit foreign labor and sell their goods back to us.”

Today Dial employs 40 workers, down from 75 in the late 1990s. It recently lost work to a lower-bidding Czech Republic manufacturer that nabbed a contract making parts for a supplier of General Electric Wind Energy Corp.

Anderberg and other Rockford employers worry that a Chinese government-owned machine tooling company, which already has bought two divisions of Ingersoll International, may now be poised to buy another—one containing intellectual property, including high-level research and design and military technology. “I cannot understand how our government can justify not only the debasement of our manufacturing industries but also our national security in a time of war,” he says.

The Rockford community and U.S. national security would get a boost from Buy America provisions House Armed Services Committee Chair Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) added to legislation authorizing the 2004 Pentagon budget.

Rep. Donald Manzullo (R-Ill.), who represents the Rockford area and helped write the bill, says, “The Pentagon wouldn’t care if everything it buys is made in China.” Joined by armsmakers such as Boeing and Lockheed Martin, the White House says the Buy America provisions are “burdensome, counterproductive and have the potential to degrade U.S. military capabilities.” But the administration does not mention jobs.

“American steelworkers are also American taxpayers, and they do not want their tax dollars subsidizing the export of their jobs,” says USWA President Leo Gerard.

White-Collar Jobs: America’s Growing Export

Ask anyone which sector of the U.S. economy comes to mind as the most likely to be shipped overseas, and chances are he or she will say manufacturing.

But though the United States lost 2.5 million manufacturing jobs since the Bush presidency beginning in 2001, U.S. corporations now are racing to outsource white-collar jobs—including work in computer sciences, engineering, entertainment, financial and medical services—to countries where workers earn far less.

Terry Antisdel was a Chicago-area engineering associate for Lucent Technologies Inc. and its predecessor AT&T for 35 years until his entire 42-member International Federation of Professional and Technical Engineers Local 81 was laid off in July. He figures his job will end up in India or China. “The words management used were a 'less-expensive offshore site,’ ” recalls Antisdel, who estimates Lucent will send a total of about 5,000 U.S. jobs offshore this year. “I feel let down,” he says. “Companies used to provide jobs for people, but now they’re just there to give money to executives, board members and shareholders.”

In late July, the Washington Alliance of Technology Workers (WashTech), a Communications Workers of America affiliated group that helps high-tech workers win a voice at work, released a tape of a conference call in which IBM’s top human relations executives discussed transferring 3 million U.S. service jobs to countries such as China and India by 2015.

Testifying in June before a House Committee on Small Business investigating the globalization of white-collar jobs, AFL-CIO Department for Professional Employees President Paul Almeida said, “If these cost-saving jobs shifts are taken to their logical extreme, even American corporations should be wondering where their future consumers will be located and how they will buy the goods and services.”

A Forrester Research study predicts U.S. employers will move about 3.3 million white-collar service jobs and $136 billion in wages overseas in the next 15 years, up from $4 billion in 2000.

White-collar jobs going and gone

The jobs already are leaving. By the end of this year, General Electric will have sent a total of 20,000 aircraft and medical research and design jobs to India and China, according to Business Week. And the Accenture consulting firm, which incorporated in Bermuda after splitting from Enron accountant Arthur Andersen, plans to send 5,000 accounting and software jobs to the Philippines in 2004, the magazine says.

According to WashTech, Microsoft plans to eliminate at least 800 full-time call-center jobs near Dallas and shift the work to India and Canada in the next fiscal year. It would be the largest one-time firing of full-time Microsoft employees in the company’s history. WashTech says a Microsoft senior vice president recently urged company managers to “pick something to move offshore today,” though Microsoft publicly has repeated it will not lay off U.S. workers and send the jobs offshore.

While the Bush administration remains silent about offshore outsourcing, states such as New Jersey are considering corrective measures. New Jersey legislators acted after the state outsourced the electronic administration of welfare and food stamp benefits to a company that then sent the jobs to India. When New Jersey citizens called to ask about benefits, they were connected with Indian workers who gave Americanized names.

A bill authored by state Assembly member Linda Greenstein (D) would have required such offshore subcontractors to disclose to New Jersey residents their employers’ true names and locations. But even this common- sense measure had no chance in the face
of massive opposition launched by Indian and American corporate interests, such as Verizon.

“We got a copy of an e-mail Verizon sent managers in New Jersey, thanking them for sending 1,800 e-mails opposing the bill,” says Don Rice, CWA’s New Jersey legislative coordinator. Activists and legislators hope to bring the bill to a vote before the legislative session ends this year.

U.S. security at stake

Offshore outsourcing of white-collar work also raises security concerns. U.S. firms are sending mapping and other such work to India, Pakistan, China, the Philippines and other countries with lower labor costs, says John Palatiello, administrator of the Council on Federal Procurement of Architectural and Engineering Services.

“This practice raises issues regarding access to data about the location of¡Kcritical infrastructure by individuals in foreign countries who have not been through any degree of security clearance and where control of access to data simply does not exist.”

Bush’s January 2002 State of the Union address made clear the danger of access to data by unfriendly foreign operatives: “Our discoveries in Afghanistan confirmed our worst fears....We have found diagrams of American nuclear power plants and public water facilities¡Ksurveillance maps of American cities and thorough descriptions of landmarks in America.”

Activists are demanding Congress review trade and tax policies that encourage white-collar offshore outsourcing. Without government intervention, warns Almeida, “short-sighted corporate policy focused on saving a few bucks in the short run will have an enormous deleterious impact on the entire U.S. economy.”

Low-Wage Jobs: Betray America’s Workers

Laid-off U.S. workers thrust into a hostile job market are discovering another ugly part of the American economy: low-wage work that pays too little to keep even a small family out of poverty.

Nearly a quarter of all U.S. workers labor in jobs that pay little but are essential to society. Sixty percent of these workers are female, and many are people of color. They care for nursing home patients and clean offices at night. They prepare food, answer call-center phones and care for our children.

These jobs generally pay less than the $8.85 hourly wage the U.S. government says it takes to keep a family of four out of poverty. Even so, many low-wage jobs offer only part-time hours, with few or no benefits. And workers in low-paying but essential jobs often are treated as disposable, quickly fired if they get sick or stay home with a sick child.

As more good jobs leave the country, the percentage of low-wage jobs keeps growing. By 2010, about 30 percent of working Americans won’t be making even poverty wages, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. A Labor Department list of the 10 occupations likely to show the largest job growth this decade is dominated by jobs that typically pay poorly—food preparation, customer service, office clerking, security and food service.

This world of low-wage jobs and the workers who do them is illuminated in The Betrayal of Work: How Low-Wage Jobs Fail 35 Million Americans, published on Labor Day by the New Press. “Traditionally, there was a promise in this country that if you worked hard, you could take care of your family,” explains author Beth Shulman, an attorney and former United Food and Commercial Workers vice president. “That promise has been broken¡Kand we have built our national prosperity on their backs.”

No job is inherently low wage

Workers in low-wage jobs frequently are labeled as lacking skills and in need of training to move into better-paying positions. But while education is a traditional route to higher pay, Shulman contends no job is inherently low wage.
“Take autoworkers, who had horrible jobs that became good ones because of unions and social legislation,” she says. “The same thing must happen with currently low-paying service- sector jobs. In Las Vegas, for example, the housekeeper represented by the Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees has decent wages and benefits thanks to unionization.”

Low-wage jobs tend to imprison the workers who perform them because of what Shulman calls a “piling on” of hardships. Workers in low-wage jobs are unlikely to have sick leave or health insurance or make enough money to afford reliable transportation or child day care. At the same time, they are likely to be in inflexible situations in which being late or missing work can result in a quick firing.

“It’s not just that you make less money in these jobs, but you have none of the basic things many of us take for granted, such as health insurance, time to care for a family member, adequate child care, some kind of retirement security, even a telephone,” Shulman says. “And this applies to one in four U.S. workers.”

Gap is growing between U.S. rich and poor

As low-wage work continues to replace jobs that pay well, the U.S. economy increasingly resembles that of a less-developed nation, with a wide gulf between rich and poor. Among all western industrialized nations, the United States has the greatest income and wage inequalities, with the best-paid 10 percent of workers making 16.6 times the amount made by the lowest-paid 10 percent, according to a 2003 analysis by the United Nations Development Program. “That’s the way we’ve been moving for some time now and continue to move,” says Heather Boushey, a Center for Economic and Policy Research economist.

To reverse this trend, the United States needs to change the rules of the game, according to Shulman. “For starters, we should immediately raise the minimum hourly wage to the poverty guideline for a family of four—$8.85 an hour versus the current $5.15 hourly federal minimum wage—and then have automatic increases so there’s not a big political battle every time it needs raising. Then, all Americans should have access to affordable health care. There are a variety of ways to do this, and we should just get it done.

“Finally, all American workers should be able to care for their children—to have access to affordable child care, and to stay with them when they’re sick or go to a PTA meeting without getting fired. The consequences for the children of today’s low-wage workers are enormous—they’re following their parents into this low-wage world.”


Companies in India celebrate

In our previous article we reported how various companies in India were employed by the Republican National Committee and the Bush Re-election campaign (see: India claims big election victory and laughs at Americans).

One interesting comment that was documented in that article was:

As Vivek Paul, Wipro VC, said after the Presidential poll, “The elections are over and so is the rhetoric; it will be easier for American corporations to step out with their outsourcing plans.”

Well a little research has found some estimates from within India about what that meant. First and foremost, it means that India is celebrating the "loss of American jobs." Folks, that is the jobs of friends, family or perhaps even your own.

Specifically on November 4, with time zone changes, roughly a day after the polls close the following was published in the India Times:

The industry is quietly celebrating that outsourcing and loss of American jobs will not be the hot-button issues any more.

And that is why they believe that "it will be easier for American corporations to step out with their outsourcing plans." Does this mean that American companies put their plans on "hold" to minimize the impact on a close election?

But the folks in India gloat a little more:

Of the documented jobs that left the US for other countries in January through March 2004, 23,396 went to Mexico, 8,283 to China, 3,895 to India, 4,419 to other Asian countries, 5,511 to Latin American countries other than Mexico and 2,933 to other countries.

A brief look at these numbers show what they call a documented American job loss of 48,237 for the first quarter of 2004. On an annual basis this would be 192,968 American jobs. And they expect American companies to now - step out - with their outsourcing plans.

Some will say that 192,968 jobs is not very many. But as you will see in coming articles that is just what is called BPO and is not the whole picture.

Lets look at the effect of three policies that affect American jobs:

  1. Outsourcing - In this article it has been shown that it is at least close to 200,00 jobs a year for the BPO segment and expected to increase
  2. H1-B visa program - allows high tech foreigners to take American jobs here without being counted in immigration totals. Used by many companies to train personnel for their foreign outsourcing programs. There are roughly a million H1-B visas active today.
  3. Legal immigration of about 1 million a year and illegal immigration of about 3 million a year resulting in lower American wages and increased social costs.

Ladies and gentlemen, you are paying the salaries of the elected and appointed officials who are doing this to you. Is this what you want to pay for? If so, why are you reading material on this web site?

If not, you are being ignored!

It should be obvious to all that this trend can not continue forever. Are there any signs that it is getting better:

A recent study of A T Kearney shows that nine out of 10 chief executives wanted to outsource to India. 25 % of the respondents wanted IT and auto component work to be given to India, 15 % favoured China and 13 % Mexico.

That should answer that question beyond a reasonable doubt. Interesting that 15% of the outsourcing chief executives favor Red China! Remember these are the folks that make the big campaign contributions that have so much influence on many of your elected officials. How will you feel when YOUR job is sent to Red China?

If you do not agree with these policies you are being ignored and your elected officials are representing special interests more than you! If you believe that this is a serious problem it is time to get involved now. The longer you wait, the harder it will be stop these destructive trends.

India’s silicon valley is delighted to move out of the limelight. The industry is quietly celebrating that outsourcing and loss of American jobs will not be the hot-button issues any more.

BPO bigwigs are already computing the gains from mega-offshoring plans on hold waiting for US presidential race to be over.

Though most of the industry majors refuse to comment on who will safeguard their interests better, they feel that economic benefits of transfer of jobs to low cost destinations will now overshadow the political rhetoric against outsourcing in the run up to the US poll.

The US presidential election was fueling the protests against job losses due to transfer of jobs.

“American law will remain the same and the outsourcing will go up irrespective of who wins. Already, we see our clients getting ready for bigger offshoring plans,’’ says head of a leading Delhi-based BPO firm. Insiders also feel the American clients might be more open to talk about their outsourcing plans to low-cost destinations like India now.

Though Kerry’s tax proposals that seek to end tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas could deter fence-sitter, analysts feel they are no more than short-term sentiment dampeners. After initially branding the shipping of jobs to countries like India and China as a threat to the US economy, Kerry has gone on record saying he can’t stop outsourcing.

Clearly, what is of greater concern is that a clear decision comes soon, irrespective of whether it favours Bush or Kerry. Though Bush is more popular, the $ 2.6 billion BPO industry is convinced that “it will soon be difficult to differentiate between Democrats and Republicans.

Obviously sector’s fate is closely tied up with the US elections, with US accounting for over 70 % of India’s IT exports. A recent study of A T Kearney shows that nine out of 10 chief executives wanted to outsource to India. 25 % of the respondents wanted IT and auto component work to be given to India, 15 % favoured China and 13 % Mexico.

Costly Trade With China
Millions of U.S. jobs displaced

Contrary to the predictions of its supporters, China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) has failed to reduce its trade surplus with the United States or increase overall U.S. employment. The rise in the U.S. trade deficit with China between 1997 and 2006 has displaced production that could have supported 2,166,000 U.S. jobs. Most of these jobs (1.8 million) have been lost since China entered the WTO in 2001. Between 1997 and 2001, growing trade deficits displaced an average of 101,000 jobs per year, or slightly more than the total employment in Manchester, New Hampshire. Since China entered the WTO in 2001, job losses increased to an average of 353,000 per year—more than the total employment in greater Akron, Ohio. Between 2001 and 2006, jobs were displaced in every state and the District of Columbia. Nearly three-quarters of the jobs displaced were in manufacturing industries. Simply put, the promised benefits of trade liberalization with China have been unfulfilled.

As a matter of policy, China tightly pegs its currency's value to that of the dollar at a rate that encourages a large bilateral surplus with the United States. Maintaining this peg required the purchase of about $200 billion in U.S. Treasury Bills and other securities in 2006 alone.1 This intervention makes the yuan artificially cheap and provides an effective subsidy on Chinese exports; best estimates are that the rate of this effective subsidy is roughly 40%. China also engages in extensive suppression of labor rights; it has been estimated that wages in China would be 47% to 85% higher in the absence of labor repression. China has also been accused of massive direct subsidization of export production. Finally, it maintains strict, non-tariff barriers to imports. As a result, China's exports to the United States of $288 billion in 2006 were six times greater than U.S. exports to China, which were only $52 billion (Table 1). China's trade surplus was responsible for 42.6% of the United States' total, non-oil trade deficit. This is by far the United States' most imbalanced trading relationship. Unless and until China revalues (raises) the yuan and eliminates these other trade distortions, the U.S. trade deficit and job losses will continue to grow rapidly in the future.

Major findings of this study:

  • The 1.8 million jobs opportunities lost nationwide since 2001 are distributed among all 50 states and the District of Columbia, with the biggest losers, in numeric terms: California (-269,300), Texas (-136,900), New York (-105,900), Illinois (-79,900), Pennsylvania (-78,200), North Carolina (-77,200), Florida (-71,900), Ohio (-66,100), Georgia (-60,400), and Massachusetts (-59,300) (Table 2A).

  • The 10 hardest-hit states, as a share of total state employment, are: New Hampshire (-13,000, -2.1%), North Carolina (-77,200, -2.0%), California (-269,300, -1.8%), Massachusetts (-59,300, -1.8%), Rhode Island (-8,400, -1.8%), South Carolina (-29,200, -1.6%), Vermont (-4,900, -1.6%), Oregon (-25,700, -1.6%), Indiana (-45,200, -1.5%), and Georgia (-60,400, -1.5%) (Table 2B).

China's entry into the WTO was supposed to bring it into compliance with an enforceable, rules-based regime, which would require that it open its markets to imports from the United States and other nations. The United States also negotiated a series of special safeguard measures designed to limit the disruptive effects of surging Chinese imports on domestic producers. However, the core of the agreement failed to include any protections to maintain or improve labor or environmental standards. As a result, China's entry into the WTO has further tilted the international economic playing field against domestic workers and firms, and in favor of multinational companies (MNCs) from the United States and other countries, and state- and privately-owned exporters in China. This has increased the global "race to the bottom" in wages and environmental quality and caused the closing of thousands of U.S. factories, decimating employment in a wide range of communities, states, and entire regions of the United States.

False promises

Proponents of China's entry into the WTO frequently claimed that it would create jobs in the United States, increase U.S. exports, and improve the trade deficit with China. President Clinton claimed that the agreement allowing China into the WTO, which was negotiated during his administration, "creates a win-win result for both countries" (Clinton 2000, 9). He argued that exports to China "now support hundreds of thousands of American jobs" and that "these figures can grow substantially with the new access to the Chinese market the WTO agreement creates" (Clinton 2000, 10). Others in the White House, such as Kenneth Liberthal, the special advisor to the president and senior director for Asia affairs at the National Security Council, echoed Clinton's assessment:

Let's be clear as to why a trade deficit might decrease in the short term. China exports far more to the U.S. than it imports [from] the U.S….It will not grow as much as it would have grown without this agreement and over time clearly it will shrink with this agreement.2

Promises about jobs and exports misrepresented the real effects of trade on the U.S. economy: trade both creates and destroys jobs. Increases in U.S. exports tend to create jobs in the United States, but increases in imports tend to destroy jobs as imports displace goods that otherwise would have been made in the United States by domestic workers.

The impact of changes in trade on employment is estimated here by calculating the labor content of changes in the trade balance—the difference between exports and imports. Each $1 billion in computer exports to China from the United States supports American jobs. However, each $1 billion in computer imports from China displaces those American workers, who would have been employed making them in the United States. On balance, the net employment effect of trade flows depends on the growth in the trade deficit; not just exports. Another critically important promise made by the promoters of liberalized U.S.-China trade was that the United States would benefit because of increased exports to a large and growing consumer market in China. This market, in turn, was to be based on an expansion of the middle class that, it was claimed, would grow rapidly due to the wealth created in China by its entry into the WTO. However, the increase in U.S. exports to China has been overwhelmed by the growth of U.S. imports, as shown below.

Growing trade deficits and job losses

The U.S. trade deficit with China has increased from $50 billion in 1997 to $235 billion in 2006, an increase of $185 billion, as shown in Table 1. Between 1997 and 2001, prior to China's entry into the WTO, the deficit increased $9 billion per year on average. Between 2001 and 2006, after China entered the WTO, the deficit increased $30 billion per year on average.

While it is true that exports support jobs in the United States, it is equally true that imports displace them. The net effect of trade flows on employment must look at the trade balance. The employment impacts of growing trade deficits are estimated in this paper using an input-output model that estimates the direct and indirect labor requirements of producing output in a given domestic industry. The model includes 200 U.S. industries, 86 of which are in the manufacturing sector (see this paper's methodology appendix for further details).3

The model estimates the labor that would be required to produce a given volume of exports, and the labor that is displaced when a given volume of imports is substituted for domestic output.4 The job losses presented here represent an estimate of what sectoral employment levels would have been in the absence of growing trade deficits.5

U.S. exports to China in 1997 supported 138,000 jobs, but U.S. imports displaced production that would have supported 736,000 jobs, as shown in the bottom half of Table 1. Therefore, the $49 billion trade deficit in 1997 displaced 736,300 jobs in that year. Job displacement rose to 1,000,000 jobs in 2001 and 2,763,000 in 2006. Prior to China's entry into the WTO, an average of 101,000 jobs per year were displaced by growing trade deficits between 1997 and 2001. After 2001, an average of 353,000 jobs per year were lost.

Growth in trade deficits with China has reduced demand for goods produced in every region of the United States and has led to job displacement in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, as shown in Table 2A and Figure A.6 More than 100,000 jobs were lost in California, Texas, and New York each. Jobs displaced due to growing deficits with China equaled or exceeded 2.0% of total employment in states such as North Carolina and New Hampshire, as shown in Table 2B. An alphabetical list of job losses by state is shown in Table 2C.

Growing trade deficits with China have clearly reduced domestic employment in traded goods industries, especially in the manufacturing sector, which has been hard hit by plant closings and job losses. Workers displaced by trade from the manufacturing sector have been shown to have particular difficulty in securing comparable employment elsewhere in the economy. More than one-third of workers displaced from manufacturing drop out of the labor force (Kletzer 2001, 101, Table D2). Average wages of those who secured re-employment fell 11% to 13%. Trade-related job displacement pushes many workers out of good jobs in manufacturing and other trade-related industries, often into lower-paying industries and frequently out of the labor market.

Some economists have quibbled with job-loss numbers extrapolated from trade flows, based on the presumption that aggregate employment levels in the United States are set by a broad range of macroeconomic influences, not just by trade flows. There is a grain of truth to this—the trade balance is but one of many variables affecting aggregate job creation in the United States.

That said, the employment impacts of trade identified in this paper can be interpreted as the "all else equal" effect of trade on domestic employment. The Federal Reserve, for example, may decide to cut interest rates to make up for job loss stemming from deteriorating trade balances (or any other economic influence), leaving net employment unchanged. This, however, does not change the fact that trade deficits by themselves are a net drain on employment.

Administration officials and other economists have argued that the capital inflow that is the mirror-image of trade deficits supports jobs in the United States by keeping interest rates lower than they would be absent this inflow. During the late 1990s, for example, these capital inflows fought rising trade deficits to a draw in terms of aggregate employment effects, and, through much of the 2000s recovery, interest-sensitive industries (housing and construction, for example) have surely expanded more than they would have absent foreign capital inflows. While these claims may be correct from a simple accounting standpoint, they do not support assertions that trade flows are a useless indicator of job loss.

First, and most simply, it is just not true that foreign capital inflows always make up trade-induced employment losses one-for-one. In the 2001 recession and the jobless recovery following, growing trade deficits accompanied aggregate job loss, even as interest rates scraped historical bottoms. Clearly, low interest rates do not always translate into enough growth in investment and consumption in interest-sensitive sectors to always sterilize the impact of growing trade deficits.

Second, the job-loss numbers identified in this report are a good measure of just how unbalanced the U.S. economy has become due to rising trade deficits. Tradable goods industries have hemorrhaged jobs, while interest-sensitive, often non-tradable, industries have seen rapid growth. At that point in the future when trade deficits begin to close (and this will happen—it is only a question of when and how), the U.S. economy will need to return many of the jobs displaced by rising trade deficits out of non-tradable and into tradable industries. Moving millions of workers back and forth between sectors is no mean trick, and accomplishing it without a recession in between will be hard; trying to do it after another couple of years of deficit growth—and an even more lopsided U.S. economy—will be even harder.

In short, while aggregate employment in the United States may well not respond job-for-job with the numbers reported in this paper on trade deficits with China, these numbers provide insight into how much harder other macroeconomic influences have to work to eliminate the employment drag from these deficits, and they provide a good (and ominous) measure of how lopsided employment growth in the U.S. economy has become owing to the unbalanced U.S.-China trade relationship.

Conclusion

The growing U.S. trade deficit with China has displaced huge numbers of jobs in the United States, and been a prime contributor to the crisis in manufacturing employment over the past six years. The current U.S.-China trade relationship is bad for both countries. The United States is piling up foreign debt, losing export capacity, and facing a more fragile macroeconomic environment. Meanwhile, China has become dependent on the U.S. consumer market for employment generation, has suppressed the purchasing power of its own middle class with a weak currency, and, most importantly, has held hundreds of billions of hard-currency reserves in low-yielding, risky assets, instead of investing them in public goods that could benefit Chinese households. Its repression of labor rights has suppressed wages, thus subsidizing its exports and making them artificially cheap. This relationship needs a fundamental change: addressing the exchange rate policies and labor standards issues in the Chinese economy are important first steps.

Methodology

This analysis utilizes an input-output model to estimate the relationships between changes in trade flows and production that could support domestic employment. The analysis covers trends in goods trade, which is dominated by manufactures. Services trade is not considered because of problems with the data, and because many of the services traded involve returns to capital and intellectual property that have little or no direct effect on employment. In addition, goods trade dominates the nation's international accounts.

This study uses the model developed in Rothstein and Scott (1997a and 1997b). This approach solves four problems that are prevalent in previous research on the employment effects of trade. Some studies look only at the effects of exports and ignore imports. Some studies include re-exports (transshipments)—goods produced outside the United States and shipped through this country to other nations—as U.S. exports. The trade data used in many studies is usually not adjusted for inflation. Finally, a single employment multiplier is often applied to all industries, despite differences in labor productivity and utilization.7

The model used here is based on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' employment requirements tables, which were derived from the U.S. input-output tables that are published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis. These tables are adjusted to 2000 price and productivity levels (BLS 2007b), in real, chain-weighted 2000 dollars. A base year with 2000 employment requirements was used to estimate the employment content of trade in all years covered in this study. This assumption was needed to control for the effects of technology. This technique isolates the effects of trade on employment from pure technology effects. This model is used to estimate the direct and indirect effects of changes in goods trade flows in each of 200 industries. This study updates the 1987 input employment requirements table used in earlier reports in this series (Rothstein and Scott 1997a, 1997b).

This analysis requires four-digit, trade data based on the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) (U.S. International Trade Commission 2007), deflated with industry-specific, chain-weighted price indices (BLS 2007a), which were updated using industry-specific producer price indexes (BLS 2007b).8 Trade data were downloaded from the U.S. International Trade Commission (2007) Web site in NAICS format. The data for 2006 are preliminary estimates; this report will be updated and expanded when the final 2006 trade data are released in June 2007. State-level employment effects are calculated by allocating imports and exports to the states on the basis of their share of four-digit, industry-level employment for 2000 (U.S. Census Bureau 2001).

The trade data were converted into chain-weighted 2000 dollars. A domestic employment requirements table for a particular base year was used to estimate the employment effects of trade in each year of the analysis, holding technology constant. The domestic employment requirement calculates the labor required to produce all of a given product within the United States. Thus, it reflects the complete labor content of output, including jobs indirectly supported in service industries. The base year of 2000 was chosen for this study because it was an approximate mid-point in the data covered in this study.

CPS data on employment by industry by was collected for each of the detailed sectors in the model. These data were used to calculate each state's share of national employment.

Outsourcing Not the Culprit in Manufacturing Job Loss

Productivity gains spawned by factory automation are driving a worldwide decline in manufacturing jobs, even in developing nations, says researcher.

For many Americans, the word “outsourcing” conjures up images of manufacturing job decline. But the United States is far from alone in losing manufacturing employment, points out Dan Miklovic (shown above), vice president and research director at GartnerG2, the business research arm of Stamford, Conn.-based Gartner Inc. “Recent studies show that manufacturing jobs are declining everywhere,” said Miklovic, during a Nov. 17 panel discussion on outsourcing, part of a Global Media Summit sponsored by Rockwell Automation, Milwaukee.

Over the past decade, U.S. manufacturing jobs have declined by more than 11 percent, Miklovic noted. But at the same time, Japan’s manufacturing employment base has dropped by 16 percent, while the number of manufacturing jobs in countries including Brazil have declined by some 20 percent, he pointed out. “And one of the largest losers of manufacturing jobs has been China,” Miklovic added. “We like to pick on China and say that all of these jobs are going to China, but they’re losing jobs in manufacturing as well.”

The reason for the job losses? Miklovic summed it up in one word: automation. Through automation, he said, “we are really doing a good job of improving the productivity of people.”

Miklovic reminded media attendees at the panel session that 25 percent to 30 percent of the U.S. population was at one time involved in agricultural jobs. But today, only 3 percent of Americans work in agriculture, yet they have turned the United States into a net agricultural exporter, he noted. “The same thing is now happening in manufacturing,” Miklovic said. “Through automation, through improved productivity, we’re driving the number of jobs down on a global basis.”

Job loss in India

Confirmation came from another panel participant, K. Muralidharan, senior general manager for Sundram Fasteners Ltd., a major Indian automotive parts manufacturer. In India, he said, growing use of automation is holding down manufacturing job growth despite the large amount of outsourcing work that is flowing to the country. “I find that outsourcing in India has actually cost jobs in Indian industry, though in the long term, it will probably have a positive effect on employment,” Muralidharan said.

Manufacturing employment remains at about the same level in India today as it was during the recession of the late 1990s, according to Muralidharan. “The Indian economy is booming now, and it is predicted that in the next five years, the curve will only be upward. But still, the jobs and employment are not really growing at the same pace,” said Muralidharan. “The economies of scale that have been created due to outsourcing from developed countries have forced Indian industry to take on automation heavily, which was not the case about 10 years back,” he said.

GartnerG2’s Miklovic noted that the use of automation contributes to a cyclical situation in many industries. When a U.S. manufacturer develops a new product, for example, the company has first-mover advantage for a time. But in the next phase, when other manufacturers enter the market, competition often shifts to price. In response, some U.S. producers may move manufacturing offshore to developing nations, to take advantage of lower labor costs. However, said Miklovic, they frequently find that the level of automation and technology available in developing nations is less than that of the United States.

This means that U.S. manufacturers who then invest in sophisticated automation technology at home can gain the upper hand for a time over lower-priced imports, thanks to the higher quality product allowed by the automation, said Miklovic. But the automation technology used in the developing nations eventually catches up, giving products produced there the advantage, he added.

“We see this in semiconductors all the time,” Miklovic said. “Semiconductors typically have been produced in Japan and Taiwan. But now there is a booming semiconductor market that’s starting in China.” While the density and sophistication of semiconductor chips produced in China cannot yet match that of Japan and Taiwan, said Miklovic, China’s technology is moving in that direction.

“Automation only works for a period of time,” said Miklovic. The lesson for manufacturers is that they must continually reinvest in automation and innovation, he said. “If you stand still, ultimately you lose.”

Sure it cost us more to build the Inetekk technology by ourselves and outsourcing to US programmers and US software developers. The prospect of sending our work abroad was never a consideration. Primarily doing so we lose the security of proprietary development to another country were we have little if any legal control regardless of how cheap that option could be. Then quality and communications is another factor, but we are also sensitive to doing business within our culture because of the process of getting what we are looking for and having the ability to have laws in effect that protect our interest in getting just what we are paying for.

Customer support by Americans
We are constantly getting offers to do our work at deep discounts by these foreign nationals, primarily India, but we are not cheap price motivated. Even our support service is run by Americans in America. We may ad to our support from Australia, but that is because they can offer the needed time frame for that region, not a cost consideration, so we can offer 24/7 seamless support for our clientele. Plus we have many Australian and New Zealander subscribers using our services and we love their accents.

Collocation in San Jose, CA USA
When we first started building the Inetekk systems, we went from a shared server in Florida to needing our own servers. We could have co located our servers in a foreign company for 1/3rd the cost but we realized by doing so our proprietary technology and secured databases would be at risk. Not a good idea. So we contracted with a well know company in San Jose. This was expensive but a very good decision. As the Internet has grown, the necessity to keep your data well secured is of the utmost importance and again, keeping this service local has proved to be a very good decision.

Servers built in USA
As we started building our server farm, again quality and service were the key issue. We went to a local shop in San Diego and hired them to build them. The first server, unaware to us, was built from foreign parts and within weeks the server started having failure issues. From then on we have demanded that all parts be US made as best we could and we have never had issues since. Our farm now runs with US made servers like NetAps, Intel, etc.

IT services by Americans
As with any server farm and web systems, having good IT professional's is imperative, and again, we hired US IT database engineers and server engineers. Same reason as our security is key and far more important than cost. For example, to use foreign IT services cost around $10 per hour. US costs are around $150 per hour. In my humble opinion, you get what you pay for.

The bottom line is future forecasting. I subscribe to the belief that our customers deserve the very best. Not only in the quality of the service, or the best customer support, but also security and the dedication to keep Inetekk around for the long run delivering the very best.

It seems the the big corporations in the US have lost sight to this fact and are all heading for serious issues as they continue down this road to losing control of their companies to the quest for seeking the lowest prices regardless. Take the Mattel toy company for example. Not long ago all their toys were US built. Today, they have lost major market share because the toys the sell now coming from Red China are toxic and low quality. It is scandalous that our children are getting toys painted with lead paint.

The future is at risk.

Q: I've been out of work for nearly five months, and the prospect of getting a job in my field (mechanical engineering) doesn't look good -- unless I want to move my family across the country. I've always wanted to have my own business, but I'm worried about the comparative lack of job security that goes with it. What's your opinion? I'm over 50 and in good health. -- Deidre N.

A: You have a lot going for you: you've always wanted to have your own business, you're over 50, and you have good health. Security? You don't have it now, and you didn't have it when you got laid off. I don't think there's anything more secure today than working for yourself. Companies will cut any costs they have to just to stay in business, and the popular trend for the past several years has been to cut staff -- fast. And consider this: when you work for someone else -- big company or small -- only a few people -- your boss and one or two more managers -- control your future security. But with your own business, if you lose a few customers, you still have others to back you up. I've always thought that having my own business gives me more security, not less, than I'd have if I worked for someone else.

Another stunning fact of life: at 50, you're more likely to be more successful at hiring yourself than trying to convince someone else to do it. Fortune magazine once ran a cover story: "Finished at Forty," detailing the corporate trend of hiring younger people. As one CEO put it: "Why should I hang on to someone who's over 50? He's tired of the long hours and wants to spend more time with his family. He probably hasn't kept up with the newest technology. I have to pay him $75,000 a year or more, and he argues with me. I can hire someone in his 30's and pay him $35 to $40,000. He'll work 60 to 70 hours a week without complaining, and he won't argue with me. This is a no-brainer."

What Do YOU Want?

My best advice: do what feels right for YOU. When you're motivated and committed to a career you really like, the money and security usually take care of themselves. There's a big difference in putting in 50-60 hours a week into a job you love, and one you just feel so-so about. If you don't look forward to going to work when you get up in the morning, you're in the wrong job. Life is too short to work at a job you don't like.

Think carefully about how you want to spend one-third to half of the rest of your life (your waking hours). It you really think it's time to have your own business, then write your answers to these questions. They'll also form the foundation for a good business plan -- an absolute must if you want to succeed.

How would you describe your business (name, location, product/service?)

How would you describe your total target market -- the customers who will be willing to pay you for your products/services?

What industry, local, or consumer trends or needs will you react to?

How would you analyze, and then describe your competition (how many; current prices; their strengths/weaknesses)?

What are your marketing and business goals?

What are your first-year growth problems -- and how will you solve them?

What finances will you need to start the business and keep it going until it can stand on its own? How will you get them?

What's your operating plan for the next five years? (At least half of the new businesses started each year fail within the first 12 months. You must plan for a long-term business.)

What's your management plan to control and develop your basic operation/service?

What equipment, inventory, labor, space, overhead do you need?

Talk to Your Banker

Once your business plan is ready, prepare your personal financial statement (all your assets and liabilities). Next. prepare a projected balance sheet and profit and loss statement for your business -- at least for the first year. Then it's time to meet with your banker.

A good banker can advise you on the likelihood of your succeeding in getting a loan. He or she can point you in the right direction to get additional information. An excellent source for learning about starting your own business is on-line: Search for "sba.gov" and you'll discover a site that has all you need to know to write your business plan and finance your business. You'll even have models of nearly 100 business plans to study and benefit from. The rest is up to you -- and your energy and commitment.

Veretekk Internet Marketing At Its Best

Today I had a pleasant surprised whilst researching for an article on the importance of personal branding to improve SEO results.
